Who is this qualification for?
The VTCT (ITEC) Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments is an advanced therapy qualification aimed at level 3 qualified practitioners aged 18 and over, who wish to add this therapy to their repertoire of treatment offerings.
What does this qualification cover?
This qualification is informed by employers and national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as an Intense Pulsed Light Systems practitioner specialising in hair reduction and skin rejuvenation. To perform Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments.
Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety pertaining to level 4 aesthetic therapies. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to communicate, consult with and analyse clients for treatment, whilst honing their customer service skills.
Qualification structure To be awarded the VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments, learners must complete units as below:
Learners must achieve all mandatory units, which include:
- Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
- Laser and light treatments for hair removal
- Laser and light treatments for skin rejuvenation
- Management of health, safety and security in the salon

The Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments is a vocationally related qualification and is focused on reducing hair growth and photo rejuvenation of the skin using intense light and laser treatments. In this qualification you will develop an understanding of managing safe working practices and how to identify and control hazards. You will also learn how to identify hair and skin conditions and those clients suitable for intense light and laser system treatments This is an approved qualification for working as an advanced beauty therapist specialising in reducing hair growth and photo rejuvenation of the skin.
As part of this qualification, you are required to produce a portfolio of evidence. A portfolio will confirm the knowledge, understanding and skills that you have learnt. It may be in electronic or paper format. Your assessor will provide guidance on how to prepare the portfolio of evidence and how to show practical achievement and understanding of the knowledge required to successfully complete this qualification. It is this booklet along with the portfolio of evidence that will serve as the prime source of evidence for this qualification. Evidence in the portfolio may take the following forms:
- Observed work
- Witness statements
- Audio-visual media
- Evidence of prior learning or attainment
- Written questions
- Oral questions
- Assignments
- Case studies
Qualification structure to be awarded the VTCT (ITEC) Level 4 Certificate in Hair Reduction and Skin Rejuvenation using Intense Pulsed Light Systems learners must achieve:
- all mandatory units
- all course work
- all case studies
- all summative assessments
Assessment – To be awarded this qualification, learners must successfully achieve the following assessments:
- Course work/portfolio evidence
- Case studies/portfolio evidence
- Summative practical assessments
All evidence should be documented in the portfolio and cross referenced to unit outcomes. Constructing the portfolio of evidence should not be left to the end of the course.
Learners are required to hold: • Level 3 qualification in Beauty Therapy or an Access to Aesthetics qualification or equivalent. All qualifications must include A&P at level 3 • Core of knowledge for Laser and Light Devices
