Product Information

Anti-Corrosion Priming

Stockcode:

We made the decision a few years ago to apply an anti-corrosion powder or wet primer to all products likely to either spend time outside or come into contact with contaminants that might affect the lifespan of the coating. Steel products are blast cleaned and are then coated once with an anti-corrosion powder or wet primer before being coated for a second time using the customer’s colour and finish of choice.

About us

Since 1990, Mastercote UK Ltd has established itself as a leading provider of high-quality coatings for aluminium, steel, and plastics.

As a family-run business located on the Rackheath Industrial Estate in Norwich, we take pride in serving a diverse clientele of sector-leading companies both locally and beyond. Our primary objective has always been to deliver exceptional customer service while consistently providing top-notch finished products. We are dedicated to completing orders promptly, often within days rather than weeks, without compromising on quality.

At Mastercote UK Ltd, we prioritise the use of premium architectural-grade powder coatings to ensure maximum protection against weathering, corrosion, and scratches for your metal products. For aluminium extrusion, we employ eco-friendly chrome-free conversion coatings as part of our comprehensive 6-stage pre-treatment system. Similarly, for ferrous metals, our advanced processes include blast cleaning using chilled iron or steel, hot zinc flame spray application, and coating with an anti-corrosion powder primer before the final colour application.

Our Services Include:

Blast Cleaning

At Mastercote, we utilise two blast containers equipped with chilled iron or steel grit to thoroughly clean surfaces of scale, rust, old paint, and contaminants. Proper surface preparation is crucial for effective coating systems, particularly for ensuring paint finish longevity in the field. As standard practice, unless otherwise specified by our clients, we adhere to the International ISO-8501-1 standard SA 2 ½ for "Very Thorough Blast Cleaning." Additionally, for coated items, we employ a pyrolysis oven to heat metals above 400 degrees prior to blast cleaning, facilitating paint or powder coating removal and significantly reducing blasting time and cost. We emphasise the importance of customers informing us about any materials that may not withstand such high temperatures before processing.

Anti-Corrosion Priming
A few years ago, we opted to enhance the durability of our products by applying an anti-corrosion powder or wet primer to items expected to be exposed to outdoor elements or contaminants that could impact coating longevity. After blast cleaning steel products, they receive an initial coating of anti-corrosion powder or wet primer before being coated a second time with the customer's chosen colour and finish, ensuring enhanced protection and longevity.

Hot Zinc Flame Spraying
Zinc, increasingly favoured over hot-dipped galvanising for its simplicity and cleanliness, offers superior corrosion resistance, even in harsh environments, without the risk of heat distortion or the need for post-coating adjustments. Prior to zinc spray application, we meticulously blast clean the substrate to ensure a debris-free, roughened surface. Molten zinc is then hand-sprayed onto the substrate, typically reaching 60-80 microns thickness, although thicker coats are necessary for offshore applications. Following application, the zinc requires sealing or painting for additional protection. For items like gates and railings intended for powder coating, we apply an anti-corrosion primer before adding the customer's chosen colour coat, providing three layers of robust corrosion resistance.

Non-Chromate Aluminium Pretreatment
Our comprehensive six-stage aluminium pretreatment process involves immersing the aluminium or alloy in 7.5-meter-long baths of various chemicals and rinses, resulting in an outstanding base for coating and ensuring a durable, corrosion-resistant surface. Following immersion in an acid etch cleaner to eliminate oils and contaminants, the aluminium undergoes three rinse tanks (two towns, one demineralised) before immersion in the conversion coating, which bonds with the clean, etched aluminium. After a final demineralised rinse and drying in an oven, the aluminium is ready for coating, pending necessary quality control checks.

Powder Coating
We exclusively utilise top-quality architectural-grade powders, boasting a vast array of colours in various gloss levels readily available. With two online coating plants capable of handling materials up to 7.5 meters in length and two box ovens accommodating wider, taller, or heavier items, we ensure efficient processing. Powder coatings are applied through electrostatic spray deposition, where a spray gun imparts an electrostatic charge to powder particles, attracting them to the grounded metal substrate. Following application, the parts undergo curing in ovens at temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius, facilitating chemical reactions that melt and adhere the coating to the substrate. Customers are urged to inform us of any materials unsuitable for such temperatures before processing.

Wet Painting
As experts in coating uPVC windows, doors, fascia, guttering, and other home improvement products, we offer a wide array of colours within a remarkably short turnaround time of 5-7 working days, contrasting with manufacturers' limited colour choices and extended lead times for bespoke orders. Our specialisation extends to providing personalised colour schemes, such as retaining white interiors while displaying customised colours externally, achieved through meticulous masking and high-quality paint application. Additionally, we cater to wet painting needs for automotive, manufacturing, and construction sectors, frequently processing wheels, frames, tools, gates, and railings through our spray-bake unit.

Our state-of-the-art coating facilities are equipped to handle products of various sizes and shapes, with main coating lines capable of processing lengths up to 7.3 meters. Additionally, we boast box ovens designed to accommodate wide, tall, and deep-shaped products, ensuring thorough and uniform coating application.

With specialised equipment such as a pyrolysis oven for removing stubborn coatings from ferrous metals and two grit blast units for blasting a wide range of items, from small brackets to large gates and car chassis, we offer comprehensive solutions tailored to meet diverse coating needs.

If you have an upcoming project or require more information about our services, we encourage you to reach out to us. Our team is readily available to discuss your requirements and provide personalised assistance to ensure your coating needs are met with precision and excellence.

Mastercote UK Ltd

We have 15 year old MFI kitchen wanted to update 26 old rusty stainless steel handles because they are long odd sizes. You can't just buy them off the shelf. So popped into Mastercote reception, fantastic experience very helpful. Time in explaining what type of finishes were available, very helpful with colour choices. We are so impressed with the powder coat finish with the amount of work involved very happy with price paid. Would highly recommend.
