Our History
Spectra began life in the 1960’s when LED and Gas Plasma displays were still a twinkle in the sign industry’s proverbial eye. Spectra-Tek, as it was known back then, became a pioneer in the development of related numeric driver systems. Including the gas plasma driver IC the “8880”, we still use today. By the late 1970’s, Spectra-Tek had moved its focus towards intrinsically safe instruments, for which it became a world leader. In 1981, a group of engineers with big ideas in radio telemetry, acquired the displays division of Spectra-Tek, to fund the development of their patented mobile data systems.
Little did they know they’d go on to develop the first commercially viable alphanumeric, full dot matrix, LED system. All of a sudden they could construct extremely reliable and bespoke information systems, opening the door to new markets in manufacturing, public transport and corporate business. The result was such a resounding success, the engineers no longer needed the displays division to fund their core business. And so, in 1989, Spectra Displays was formed, acquiring purely the displays division.
You could say the rest is history, but since then Spectra has been unstoppable in its pursuit of excellence in LED display systems.
