About us

With more than 20 years of experience in delivering risk assessments for private landowners, developers, and commercial clients, Terrenus Land & Water provides unparalleled soil, rock, and water investigation services.

Established in 2000 as Terrenus Consulting Ltd, we initially focused on the geotechnical and contaminated land aspects of land development. Over time, we have evolved into the UK's premier provider of flood risk assessments and sustainable drainage systems for both domestic and commercial clients nationwide.

At Terrenus, our team of skilled and experienced professionals is dedicated to meeting our customers' needs, ensuring complete satisfaction from start to finish.

Our Land Development Services Include:

Soil

At Terrenus, we specialise in contaminated land risk assessment and geotechnical engineering, aiming to minimise development risk and costs while providing robust engineering solutions. Our comprehensive services cover the entire project lifecycle, from conceptual site models to foundation construction, including Stage 1 Desk Studies, Stage 2 Site Intrusive Ground Investigations, Remediation Strategy, and Validation. We perform detailed contaminated land risk assessments and groundwater modelling to manage contamination risks cost-effectively. Our expertise extends to water supply pipe determination, waste minimisation, slope stability modelling, and settlement analysis for various project scales. We offer bespoke foundation designs, considering factors like sulphur impact on concrete, and provide gas and groundwater monitoring with approved equipment. Our team is also skilled in identifying and treating invasive species, conducting soil percolation tests, and performing Environmental Impact Assessments, ensuring efficient and compliant development solutions.

Rock
Geology is central to our practice at Terrenus, where we excel in rock investigation, mapping, and mine stabilisation engineering, including grouting and mine shaft capping. Our staff frequently utilise the British Geological Survey library in Edinburgh to review Mine Abandonment Plans and geological mining memoires for comprehensive Coal Mining Risk Assessments (CMRA). We facilitate the application and approval of Coal Authority Licenses for intrusive drilling works. Our services include the design and supervision of exploratory site investigations via trenching or rotary boreholes to identify mine shaft locations, historic mine workings, and mineral stability. Additionally, we provide consultancy and supervision for mine stabilisation, including mine shaft capping and grouting of historic workings. We offer rotary open hole and rotary core rock engineering geology logging services, including assessments like Rock Quality Designation (RQD) and Total Core Recovery (TCR). We also conduct visual inspections for rock face stability or rock fall potential, providing cost-effective remedial recommendations.

Water
Terrenus excels in evaluating the water environment through hydrological and hydraulic assessments for flood risk and Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) design, in compliance with current legislation. We conduct coastal, riverine, surface water, and groundwater assessments via desktop studies, outline, or detailed hydraulic modelling in 1D, 2D, or combined scenarios. Our goal is to provide cost-effective, robust flood risk assessments using diverse methodologies, including the Flood Estimation Handbook and various rainfall runoff models. We utilise platforms like MIKE11, HEC-RAS, and TUFLOW for hydraulic modelling and employ LiDAR data and QGIS software for pluvial assessments. Our services include interpreting Scottish Water Asset Plans, applying for SEPA licenses under the Controlled Activities Regulations, and designing SuDS using MicroDrainage software.

We offer an extensive array of services for land development solutions, encompassing soil, rock, and water. Alongside delivering outstanding customer service, we prioritise contaminated land risk assessment and geotechnical engineering. Our primary objective is to minimise development risk wherever possible and provide strong engineering solutions.

Throughout the years, Terrenus has successfully completed numerous projects across the UK, in locations including Paisley, Bishopton, Hamilton, Castle Douglas, Dumfries, Galloway, Stranraer Harbour, Hawick, North Lanarkshire, Braehead, and more. We serve the mining, flooding, geotechnical, and contaminated land sectors, providing a dependable and efficient service that stands out.

At Terrenus, we uphold a strong work ethic and take pride in our ability to exceed customer expectations, regardless of the project's difficulty.
