SMARTSENS from KROHNE - new analytical sensors requiring no transmitters
30 August 2013
This year has marked a turning point in analysis, with process instrumentation solutions provider KROHNE, introducing SMARTSENS, a range of 2-wire loop powered analytical sensors with built in transmitter technology.
SMARTSENS sensors reduce the risk of failure along the chain significantly from sensor to process control system and ease the handling of analytical sensors in a ground breaking way. The first step includes the sensors for pH, ORP and conductivity, followed by other parameters.Previously, analytical sensors required an external on site transmitter for translating sensor signals to process control systems. Taking error potential into account by the requirements of IEC 61508/IEC 61511 in the chain from sensor to process control system, the transmitter represented the main source of error.
Frequent problems included false installation, cabling and configuration of the transmitter. To eliminate these risks, KROHNE has miniaturised the transmitter and housed it within the sensor head. With this new technology, any sensor from the SMARTSENS range can be connected directly to the process control system, with direct communication via 4…20 mA/HART. Providing a direct connection from the sensor to the process control system via a standardised fieldbus is an industry first for KROHNE.
Influences such as medium, temperature, humidity, pollution and environmental conditions, can have an effect on analytical sensors, causing a loss of accuracy over time and a need for calibration cleaning and eventually, replacement. Most analytical sensors in the field today, use analogue technology and have to be calibrated on site together with the transmitter, even when installed at remote measuring points. This presents less than ideal conditions for calibration and can result in false values in the process control system. However, SMARTSENS provides a secure alternative.
All SMARTSENS sensors are digital sensors and can be calibrated off-line in a laboratory under controlled conditions. The sensors will retain the calibration data and can simply be plugged straight in again on site. For offline calibration, using a USB interface cable for bi-directional HART 7 communication and power supply, SMARTSENS sensors can be connected directly to a PC running the same PACTware (FDT/DTM) as applied in the asset management system.
Typical industry sectors that can benefit from SMARTSENS sensors include chemical & pharmaceutical, food & beverage, power generation and water & waste water. Each SMARTSENS sensor is specifically designed for its area of application with approvals and certifications ranging from installation in explosive areas (zone 0) to hygienic areas.
To compliment the SMARTSENS sensor family, KROHNE has also introduced an extensive range of accessories, including loop powered displays, USB cables and mounting assemblies.
