Silence Is Not Always Golden

08 September 2008

When the power goes out, it isn't just the lights that go with it. PULS, the rail power supplier has developed technology to make sure their customers fon't lose out.

railSilence; the computers shut down, the air conditioning stops and you are plunged into darkness. With the UK mains infrastructure now failing on a regular basis and little being done to fix the problem, the need for companies to protect their business with a battery backup system is increasing. PULS, the world’s most advanced DIN Rail power supply

manufacturer, have developed the UB DC UPS systems range. The UB units are designed to back up industrial control and automation systems so that when the power fails, your business does not.

In our modern world we are using more and more electrical devices, and our national grid is under a huge amount of strain, so much so that a large percentage of our electricity needs are now provided by France. This has lead to an increase in brown outs, when the power dips, and blackouts, when the power cuts out completely. Both blackouts and brownouts can cause major problems for industry, not only in time lost by the power cut itself but also for the time needed to reset the systems or retrieve lost information.

After researching the market and examining what their customers need, PULS developed the UB range of DC UPS systems. There are currently three separate units, the UB10.241, the UB10.245 and the UBC10.241.

The UB10.241 is the standard battery back up module with external single battery capacity. The unit will provide 24Vdc and 10A continuously, or 15A for short periods of time. The unit only requires a single 12V lead acid battery, which means the battery will be better charged and last longer than if two were used in parallel. The UB10.241 comes with either a DIN Rail mounting 7Ah battery or a chassis mounted 26Ah battery, however due to Smart Charge design it can be operated with an array of battery sizes to meet customers’ specific requirements.

The UB10.245 is a dual 24Vdc and 12Vdc output buffer unit with external batteries. This unit is able to provide up to 10A on the 24V and up to 5A on the 12V output. As with the UB10.241, the Smart Charge function allows customers to use specific battery sizes to suit their needs. Also, with an array of output signals for operation, charging and battery monitoring, the UB10.245 is ideal for a multitude of applications.

The UBC10.241 battery module has been designed with an integrated high charge 5Ah battery. The unit will provide 10 minutes of backup for 24Vdc 10A systems. However unlike most integrated battery systems the UBC10.241 battery is replaceable so it will give customers many extra years of life.

Harry Moore, Managing Director of PULS UK comments “The PULS DC UPS systems have been selling like hot cakes. As the UK power infrastructure is degrading they have gone from being a useful part of a control or automation system to a business essential!”

With Energy requirements for modern life on the increase and not enough being done to increase output capability it is becoming invaluable to integrate power backup systems into industrial equipment. Without them how much could it cost you?
