Award winning Architects put a Tree in the Party Bag
24 November 2008
Landscape architects, Southern Green celebrate their 10 year anniversary with a promise to plant a tree for every guest at their anniversary party.
North East-based chartered landscape architects, Southern Green, celebrated their tenth year in business this October with an anniversary event – aptly taking place at Piccolino’s Restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne, overlooking one of the firm’s renowned award winning projects, Trinity Gardens.
As a company boasting a wealth of regeneration and environmental projects, the celebrations were marked with the promise of a new tree to be planted - one for each person attending - in the City’s stunning Jesmond Dene, part of the Ouseburn Parks project, another of the firm’s commissions.
Southern Green’s portfolio includes a diverse range of developments - urban regeneration, civic spaces, historic parks and gardens, sport and play areas, community facilities, environmental assessments, housing, schools and institutions.
Based in Low Fell, Gateshead, employing a team of 12, Southern Green’s projects have spanned the North East and North West, with high profile schemes delivered in Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, Tees Valley and Northumberland, as well as Cumbria and Yorkshire- totalling an impressive 444 completed projects and 270 clients on their company CV since 1998.
With a string of awards under their belts – including a Hadrian Award, Civic Trust Award, Lord Mayor’s Design Award, Streetscene Award and Green Heritage Site Award - Directors, Ros Southern and Simon Green have built an impressive client base, working alongside health and local authorities, contractors, developers and private clients. Notable completed projects include the aforementioned Trinity Gardens, and Leazes Park, both in Newcastle, as well as the city’s Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital, Cardinal Hume School in Gateshead, and Durham Crematorium memorial gardens, Blackhill and Consett Park, East Shore Village Seaham, and Sir Bobby Robson Park in County Durham.
Current projects at the design and planning stage include the Stephenson Quarter, £250million regeneration project south of Newcastle’s Central Station, the two largest Heritage Lottery Fund park projects in the region Ouseburn Parks Newcastle and Stewart Park Middlesbrough, Southwick housing in Sunderland, the regeneration project Central Park Darlington, as well as Blyth Promenade and Town Centre improvement and the gardens for the new centre at the Great Yorkshire Showground Harrogate. Taken together these projects will result in 120 hectares of improved parkland over the next three years, along with five hectares of new urban public realm – ensuring that Southern Green has a lot to shout about both now and in future years to come.
Co-Director, Simon Green, said: “During times of financial constraint, it is even more important to invest in parks and civic spaces to ensure that we have safe and inspiring spaces close to home and to attract investment in the future. We’re thrilled to be celebrating our tenth anniversary and thought that planting a tree for every person attending our celebrations was a great way of showing how we have always striven to be environmentally conscious when working on projects.’’
Fellow Director, Ros Southern, added: “All of us at Southern Green feel really passionately about what we do and we are excited to be celebrating our tenth anniversary with clients and friends – I think we’ve chosen the perfect venue too as our work at Trinity Gardens illustrates one of our most high profile projects to date – we hope there are many more like this to come as we look forward to working on further exciting projects in the future.”
