Dorgards save lives at potentially catastrophic Nursing Home fire
14 June 2007
The fast reaction of Dorgard fire-door hold-open devices from Fireco, has prevented a blaze in Uplands Registered Nursing Home at Maisemore in Gloucestershire from spreading and averting what could have been a catastrophic loss of life.
The fire occurred on the first floor at 10.30pm, and thanks to the efficiency of the Dorgard listening devices, fixed to fire-doors at the ends of an upper corridor leading to five residents' rooms, the fire doors promptly closed when the alarm bell sounded. Because of this automatic response, no one occupying the adjoining bedrooms suffered any harmful effects of smoke inhalation - a hazard which has proved fatal in nursing home fires where fire door retainers have not been installed. Graham Rigby, the owner of Uplands, says: 'The Dorgards did a brilliant job in closing the fire doors. The fire brigade attended our emergency call within a few minutes. The corridor concerned was compartmentalized as a fire zone so only five residents' rooms were affected. The fire inspector commended the activation of the Dorgards and, following the inspector's recommendations, we intend to install Dorgards on all our residents' doors, in addition to the corridor fire-doors.' Uplands is registered for high dependency nursing and residential dementia, with respite, convalescent, and short or long term care services for up to 50 residents. Mr Rigby recommends the Dorgard wire-free solution to other nursing homes where unrestricted access for the infirm or elderly often requires fire doors to be retained open.In these situations, Fireco Ltd reaffirms that the Dorgard principle is the simplest and most cost-effective way of legally holding open fire-doors in any position and automatically releasing them when the fire alarm sounds. With more than 160,000 Dorgards installed across the UK, the Dorgard provides safe, proven listening technology that offers significant cost advantages as the Dorgard unit can be fitted in minutes, with no wiring required. The Dorgard range is now acknowledged as an established technology offering a solution over the widest range of applications, and complies fully with all relevant British Standards, EC Directives and UK Fire Regulations.
