Shepshed Schools' didactic clock unique
11 March 2009
PLM Ilumination designed and manufactured the clock and installed it on the Leicestershire schools' four meter stainless steel obelisc.
Rather fittingly, the clock and obelisc have a time theme and the obelisc itself is reminiscent of a gnomon - ancient Greek for "indicator" - in this case, the centre part of the sun dial that casts the shadow.
Over 1000 LEDs' feature in the clock and are arranged in a coded sequence of rectangular panels.
The clock acknowledges the work of the late Dieter Binninger on the world's first didactic clock, erected in Berlin in 1975. The Berlin clock only exists today in the form of miniature replicas, making Shepshed Schools' clock quite unique.
