Academy of Advanced Beauty
18 October 2018
The summer is over and we are getting back into the world of darker skies and colder weather.
As the tan fades, so the time has come to re-enter the real world. There must be a reason why the school year starts in September, something about being ready for a regenerative burst of energy. It’s now October and time to talk about non-invasive aesthetic treatments. If done properly, many non-invasive treatments can now be almost as effective as a face lift, and be very much safer, less painful and cheaper. The magic element of course is “done properly”. It never ceases to amaze us here at the Academy how much faith people are prepared to put in technology - just because treatment “X” is the latest and greatest treatment, there is no guarantee that you will benefit at all if the therapist is not really competent - sitting in a F1 racer does not make you Lewis Hamilton!
Because the UK is one of the only countries in the EU to not have strict standards of training for advanced beauty treatments, manufacturers and distributors of beauty therapy equipment have traditionally shown clients “the ropes” - how to use the machine but not what the treatment is actually doing beneath and above the skin. As the technology advances over time, so does the power of what these machines can achieve at cellular level. It is important to be aware of the basic anatomic and physiological effects many of these newer treatments are having on the body and in particular on the skin, and also how to act should something go wrong during, or after the treatment. Like with specialists such as surgeons, sometimes routine operations and treatments can go wrong but it is how they deal with them and ensure the client is safe that matters the most. Being only trained to machine function operating capacity will not give you as a therapist this knowledge and most certainly isn’t the best way of keeping the client safe and achieving the best possible results. As it is well known that the latest technology in aesthetics is now so powerful and effective only in the right hands, why would anyone sacrifice safety in the name of cheaper equipment when basic levels of safety are at risk?
All the reputable insurance companies are being forced to take notice as the number of serious personal injury claims are rising. As a result of this, insurance premiums are also rising. Now many insurance companies demand that therapists are trained before they will provide you with insurance. Due to squeezed budgets and lack of direction due to Brexit negotiations, the government will not directly spend money on regulation but they have encouraged industry self-regulation (in the form of the Joint Council Cosmetic Practitioners), but this initiative has not even started to scratch the surface of the problem, having only just been launched. Moreover, appeasing the voices of all interested parties proves difficult when machine manufacturers would only incur more expense in selling their equipment if standards of decent training were imposed. Therefore the onus is now on the prudent therapist to seek out the training themselves so that their practice is the safest and highest quality it can be.
Seems all doom and gloom? Not quite, there’s a simple way to achieve dramatic results whilst keeping your clients safe. Good quality training!
Competent therapists using good quality, safe and well-engineered equipment will achieve stunning results. If one were just to look into the matter, it can be found that with very little research salesmen who advocate their “training” with only Certificates of Attendance on offer do not provide in-depth or high-quality training and often these certificates are meaningless to insurers and councils looking to approve special treatment license applications.
If you are a serious therapist interested in training, we are an independent specialist training establishment offering short courses, a Level 3 and series of Level 4 courses, and we provide our students with proper accreditation which is accepted by all of the UK leading insurance providers.
