SIGHTSAVERS COMMEMORATE NEW SITE OPENING
26 July 2007
UK Based charity Sightsavers and local sign making firm Austin Luce team up on a project to aid greater navigation through improved signage for blind and visually impaired people using the new Sightsavers-supported eye centre at Kanifing in The Gambia.
Nicky Bovey, Assistant to the Director of Fundraising at Sightsavers, had quite a task on her hands to ensure that the signage for the new centre was delivered on time for the grand opening of the new eye centre funded by the Sheikh Zayed foundation. With quite an unusual project it was important to get a signage maker who could accommodate many languages including Arabic as well as Braille! With previous experience of unusual signage requirements Austin Luce sign makers were top if the supplier list. “Austin Luce were brilliant, very accommodating, and weren’t phased at all by the unusual nature of the brief, they immediately understood what we needed” commented Nicky Bovey. The new eyecare centre in The Gambia is used as a training centre and hospital, modelled on a traditional African compound, with buildings arranged around a central courtyard. A concept that is highly manifested in the in patient services, with 3 wards and operating blocks all turned inwards to form a communal courtyard linked by a network of corridors. Kim Bull, Managing Director of sign making company Austin Luce, who furnished the centre with signage commented “It was great to get involved with such a valuable project, as well as providing signage in many different languages. Increasingly we are being asked to supply signs such as tactile and Braille like the ones provided for Sightsavers, which in turn has enhanced, and will continue to enhance the experience of partially sighted and blind patients visiting the centre, giving them greater ability to navigate independently around the new facility”.Other Press Releases By This Company
