UK-based company BIL Materials Handling, a division of Baz-Roll International Limited, have just announced the launch of special grade magnesium alloy axle brackets. The brackets will now be fitted as standard on all their AluTruk aluminium sack truck and hand truck models. The brackets were introduced after substantial research, development and investment in new tooling, brought about as part of the company’s commitment to continual improvement. The result is an AluTruck axle bracket die-cast from the strongest magnesium alloy currently used in the sack truck and hand truck industry. Development of the new magnesium alloy axle brackets was not an easy task. The new sack truck brackets needed to be less brittle when exposed to lower temperatures for cold and freezer area usage. They also needed to be stronger and have higher-impact resistance than standard aluminium die-cast brackets. A variety of existing magnesium alloys already existed but not all offered the properties required. Following detailed testing and analysis, experts in casting technology specified and produced the best magnesium alloy to suit the AluTruk hand truck axle brackets. Next BIL had to find a company capable of manufacturing the brackets. Not all casting foundries are the same and there are actually only a very few foundries that can provide magnesium alloy die-casting, a production process that is notoriously difficult and very delicate. “We searched the world before finally settling on our chosen partner” said Mark Farrell, Managing Director BIL Group Ltd. The company eventually selected to manufacture BIL’s high quality sack truck brackets is the same European casting foundry that supplies some of the world’s most well-known companies - Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes and Ducati to name but a few. The investment made by BIL in raising the quality standards of their AluTruk range of hand trucks and sack trucks is part of their commitment to continual improvement in both quality and customer service. As of March 2009 all BIL hand trucks will be supplied with the new improved, high-quality magnesium alloy axle brackets.
