The Importance of Health & Safety Signs

15 July 2020

Even without a worldwide pandemic, the importance of health and safety signage should never be underestimated.

The majority of signs are required by law and are present in order to protect any person within a specific area. Health and Safety Signs help in the fight to minimise risk. Today we are investigating some of their many benefits and what makes signage effective.

Safety Sign Categories

Most health and safety signs fall into the following brackets:

Mandatory: It’s important that employees and visitors remain safe onsite. Mandatory signs tell everyone that some form of protective wear is required. Building sights are a good example, requiring individuals to wear hard hats.

Prohibition: In contrast to mandatory signs, prohibition communicates what must NOT be carried out. Common signs within this category include ‘no smoking’ and ‘no entry’.

Safe Condition: Imperative to the safe conduct of anyone within a specific vicinity, safe condition signs purport the actions individuals are required to take in order to manage their own security. Employees and visitors need to be fully aware of where fire exits and first aid boxes are via relevant signage.

Warning: If hazards are present, warning signs must be shown. Brightly coloured, these include an image of potential threats. You’ve probably seen these where dangerous machinery is operating or if chemicals are being used.

Fire Equipment: Intrinsic for use in the unfortunate event of a fire, signage for fire extinguishers, alarms and other similar effects should be clearly visible.

Additional Safety Signs

As of 2020 we are now seeing Coronavirus safety signs pretty much everywhere we go. At eye level we are provided with a range of information including ‘Use Hand Gel’ and ‘Stay Two Metres Apart’. Looking down over, floors are littered with black and yellow safety signs, showing people immediately where and how to stand.

Safety Sign Benefits

Other than the legalities and minimising risk, there are numerous other benefits attached to safety signage.

Consistency: Using the same signage to highlight fire exits across the board ensures people always understand protocol.

Confidence: Showing potential employees that their health and safety is your priority offers confidence to staff. It also builds a good ethical balance among a workforce.

Motivation: When your team is confident they are your priority, motivation and productivity is likely to be much higher.

Health and Safety signs are required by law. Use them properly and companies increase trust from customers whilst becoming a reputable place to work.
