Bifold Door Systems Q&A

10 January 2022

We've taken all the questions we get asked about buying a bifold, and put it into a document to help. We are also at the end of a phone 01246 813 131.

Can you help with my measurements?

At Green Tree Doors we have a highly experienced and skilled Technical Manager who is happy to talk through structural opening, frame size, door size, number of doors and configuration options. When installing our internal bifold doors it is really important to make sure the door closely matches the dimensions of the gap you are installing into. This is to reduce the space for cold air to pass through at the edges.

How do I measure for a bifold door set?
For the width take 3 measurements – top, middle and bottom. For the height, measure both ends top to bottom, then approximately every 1200mm to see if opening is parallel. Take the smallest size from width and height, then take approximately 10mm from width and 6mm from height and this will give you the frame size while building in tolerance. Look at the design of the doors required and use the sizing and configuration graph to see what suits your home the best, or simply phone us with sizes and we can advise: T 01246 812131 Sizes & Configurations (see our website for this table) https://greentreedoors.co.uk/project/bifold-foor-systems-qa/

What is included with the Bifold System?

Many sizes and configurations available – from 2 doors to 5 doors Unfinished Frame (requires finishing) Hardware (including head track, running gear, hinges/pivot Fitting instructions Features: Top hung system with all the weight in the head track for a smoother operation. 5 door systems come complete with floor tracking (see website for more details).

What is not included?
Drop bolts are available to purchase separately and are recommended for 4 or 5 door systems Handles and latches can also be purchased separately on our website .

What colours do Bifold Doors come in?
Our doors are available in white primed, unfinished oak and prefinished oak (finished). If you choose an unfinished or white primed door, it is up to you to finish with a top coat of your choice. This means that you can paint it any colour you wish, just as long as you find a suitable paint. We also recommend OSMO for natural wood finishes such as oil and wax.

What is a Traffic Door?
A traffic door is a single panel that operates separately to the bifold door system. Usually bifolds slide in pairs, so an uneven number usually results in a traffic door. These can be useful for giving you quick access between rooms as you don’t have to operate the whole sliding system unless you want to.

Will I need Planning Permission for Bifold Doors?
If you are replacing existing internal doors you won’t need to get planning permission to add internal bifold doors. If you are unsure about knocking through rooms to fit bifold doors please get in touch and we can advise on building regulations. You should always seek advice from an experienced bifold door installer.

Will Bifold Doors Add Value to my Property?
Bifold doors help light to filter through your home and open up space. This will make a living space feel bigger and your home will look more desirable which can add value when you come to sell.
