Tuscan helps Wards decide to move or improve
21 September 2009
With house prices still falling steadily, many homeowners are opting tostay put and improve their property rather than move.
With this in mind, the owners of an Edwardian house, Steve and Julia Ward have been restoring their property to its original splendour for over a year. As part of the restoration, they realised that they would also need to replace the three existing rooflights that had started to rot. However, as the property has planning restrictions, the Wards had to use a product that would be in keeping with the original architecture of the house, therefore they decided to approach Lumen, manufacturers of conservation rooflights, which replicate traditional Victorian design, to carry out the job.
The conservation rooflight from Lumen is designed to sit flush against the building which complements original architecture. The rooflight also replicates Victorian design, whilst incorporating the highest specification glazing (Pilkington Activ Neutral and Pilkington S4 Optitherm self-cleaning glass). The self-cleaning glass means that less maintenance needs to be carried out as rainwater combined with the glass’ properties will break down organic dirt.
During the installation process the Wards requested that Lumen move the positioning of one of the original rooflights to over the bathroom, so that natural light could brighten up this rather dull space. Furthermore, due to the nature of the building, and Lumens' flexible approach, alterations were able to take place to the rooflight design. The winding mechanisms were altered so that they didn’t scratch the internal wall: a loop was designed on the end of the winder which solved this problem.
After the three rooflights were installed the Wards approached Lumens' sister company, Tuscan Foundry Products, to install, on a room by room basis, traditional cast iron radiators.
Prior to Tuscan being approached, the house had a series of modern radiators with covers that did not give out enough heat to warm the house properly. The Wards wanted a more original look to the interior of their house and therefore opted for the traditional design. Cast iron radiators are also more cost-effective as they heat rooms more efficiently.
The Wards also found that by working with small companies like Lumen and Tuscan they were able to benefit from a personal service.
