13 April 2023

From April the government’s Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS) will be replaced by the less generous Energy Bills Discount Scheme (EBDS). Some businesses could face an increase of over 40% for electricity and over 20% for gas

From April the government’s Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS) will be replaced by the less generous Energy Bills Discount Scheme (EBDS). The EBDS sets a maximum discount for electricity of £19.61 per megawatt hour with a price threshold of £302 per MWh.

This compares with a government supported price of £211 per MWh. The average wholesale electricity cost for 2023 has been around £300 per MWh close to the discount threshold. Business could face an increase from £211 per MWH to around £300 per MWH and increase of 42%. The comparable figures for gas are an increase from £75 per MWH to around £91.5per MWh and increase of 22%. Standing charges and operating costs can add substantially to these rates.
