Marken reduces risk of seasonal cross infection

17 December 2009

Coming up to Christmas people are thinking about presents, trees and parties, but Marken Chemicals are thinking about surface contamination cross infection.

Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of infection. Certain germs, viruses and bacteria are spread by casually touching another person. Germs are also spread upon contact with contaminated objects or surfaces with the hands and then touching your face, mouth, eyes and nose. Marken Chemicals have a range of sanitising products to suit every situation, including dual purpose hand and hard surface alcohol wipes, to reduce the spread of infection associated with in-efficient hand washing.

Managing Director Ken Thistlewaite commented;

“Good hand washing techniques include using an adequate amount of soap, rubbing the hands together to create friction, and rinsing under cold running water. The use of gloves is not a substitute for hand washing. When soap and water is not available, one alternative is to use waterless hand sanitising products. Some of these products are made of ethyl alcohol mixed with emollients, (skin softeners), and other agents. These are available as a rinse, gel, or as wipes. The wipes would be the most effective option when hands are heavily contaminated. These new wipes are not only cost effective, but effective even on heavily contaminated hands and hard surfaces.”

When should I wash my hands? Different situations where people can pick up ‘germs’ include:
•    when hands are visibly soiled,
•    after using the toilet facilities,
•    nappy changing,
•    after blowing your nose or sneezing into your hands
•    before and after eating, handling food, drinking or smoking
•    after touching raw meat, poultry, or fish
•    visiting or caring for sick people
•    handling pets and other animals
•    after handling any type of waste

Ensuring that employees/customers and others wash their hands properly after using the toilet facilities on your premises is very important in reducing gastrointestinal infections.

For effective hand washing, follow these steps:
•    remove rings
•    use warm water and wet your hands thoroughly
•    use soap and lather well
•    scrub your hands, between your fingers and wrists
•    scrub under your nails
•    rinse thoroughly
•    turn off the taps with a paper towel
•    dry your hands with a single use towel or air dryer
•    protect your hands from touching dirty surfaces as you leave the toilet facilities
