Time-of-Flight Sensors in Factory Automation and Robotics
13 June 2024
Technology company Broadcom’s recent webinar, co-sponsored by their UK distributor AP Technologies, is now available to view on demand.
The webinar introduces the Broadcom® AFBR-S50 ToF-sensor family, how it works, and how it helps you to solve your sensing problems.Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors are a game-changer for distance measurement. They offer significant advantages over traditional methods, providing accurate readings from centimetres to meters, even in bright light. And unlike ultrasonic or infrared sensors, the sensors offer excellent performance in terms of precision, range, and resistance to interference.
ToF sensing is similar to lidar and uses light pulses (typically 680nm or 850nm) to measure distance. By analysing the phase shift of the reflected light from a continuous and modulated laser beam, the sensor determines the object's distance.
The technology was developed specifically for industrial applications which need high speeds, excellent accuracy, small size and reliable distance readings.
Key takeaways
• Accuracy even in bright sunlight: Advanced ambient light suppression enables accurate operation in diverse outdoor environments, including full sunlight.
• Target versatility: ToF sensors do not require retroreflective targets, delivering consistent, reliable distance measurements regardless of target surface properties, be it white, black, coloured or metallic.
• Broad application potential: This technology empowers a wide range of industrial automation tasks, including collision avoidance in AMRs/AGVs, void and overhang detection, precise fill level sensing, and efficient conveyor belt monitoring.
