Future-proofing a £93,000 Ferrari with 3D scanning

02 October 2024

For car enthusiasts, the allure of owning a rare, high-performance vehicle is irresistible.

The idea of driving a piece of automotive history is a dream for many, but when that dream car is 1 of just 7 in the world, the stakes of ownership rise dramatically.

What if something happens to it? Where do you even find replacement panels for a car that’s no longer in production?

Foskers, the UK’s oldest independent Ferrari specialist, found themselves faced with this exact challenge.

Situated right at the Paddock Entrance to the legendary Brands Hatch Circuit, they’ve seen their share of extraordinary vehicles, but this was no ordinary request.

Their client had recently acquired a Koenig Specials F48, previously owned by then deputy chairman of Newcastle United FC, Douglas Hall, and Professor David Clarke, who is responsible for many of the F48’s distinctive upgrades.

Priced at an eye-watering £93,000, this wasn’t just a car – it was an artefact straight from the Petrol Head Hall of Fame. And like any rare treasure, it needed to be protected.

How to protect a luxury car
The customer’s concern was clear: if anything happened to this extremely rare Ferrari, finding replacement parts could be next to impossible.

This wasn’t just about sourcing standard Ferrari components; Koenig Specials had completely reimagined the car, leaving only the doors and bonnet stock. Every other part – from the fenders to the rear wing – was unique to the F48’s design.

In the world of rare and vintage cars, accidents, even minor ones, can quickly turn into restoration nightmares.

It’s not just about finding the right part, but recreating it to perfection. If damaged, who could create panels for a car that’s no longer being made? How do you shield such a rare asset from the unknown?

That’s when Foskers contacted us, seeking a cutting-edge solution for a truly unique problem. They needed a digital safeguard – something their client could fall back on in case disaster struck.

3D model creation for car body panels
Enter our team and the NimbleTrack wireless 3D scanning system, equipped to capture every precise curve and detail of the Ferrari F48.

Using advanced blue laser technology, our scanner captures up to 4,900,000 measurements per second with an incredible accuracy of up to 0.020 mm – ensuring even the smallest contours of the car’s body were perfectly replicated.

With this powerful tool, we could create an exact digital twin of the F48 in stunning detail, giving Foskers and their client peace of mind.

More than just an insurance policy, this digital model became a lifeline.

By scanning the full body of the Ferrari, we created a 3D model that could be used not only to reproduce the car’s body panels but also to craft future parts in cutting-edge materials like carbon fibre, helping preserve and enhance the car’s longevity.

In the event of any damage, this 3D model could be used to fabricate perfect replacement panels – no guesswork, no compromises.
