Reclaiming Lost Airflow from Cable Cut-outs Improves Efficiency
02 December 2024
Effective airflow management best practices enable the optimisation of Data Centre cooling.
By optimising cooling, energy efficiency gains can be achieved. Quick improvements to airflow management can be made by sealing cable cut-outs in Data Centre raised floors.Data halls should be set up in a hot-aisle-cold-aisle configuration. To achieve good airflow management, you must prevent the mixing of hot and cold airstreams. Only allow the cold air that cools the IT equipment to come into the cold aisle, where it is supplied via floor grilles. Seal any other openings in the raised floor to prevent cold air leakage.
Openings in raised floors allow the building infrastructure, like pipes and cables, to enter the room. Such openings also enable power and connectivity under racks.
Seal these openings effectively using KoldLok raised floor grommets.
KoldLok floor grommets improve efficiency. This range of raised floor grommets seals cable openings in raised floors. By sealing these openings, it reduces bypass airflow and latent cooling, both of which are major contributors to airflow management inefficiency. Sealing openings also improves the static air pressure under the floor.
KoldLok grommets come in various shapes and sizes. Original KoldLok grommets fit in or on top of the floor tile and work for both new and existing cut-outs. Models like Integral, Surface, and Extended feature double layers of brushes that provide an effective seal, increasing static pressure under the floor while reducing bypass airflow and latent cooling, all of which enhance airflow management.
KoldLok Round grommets are available in two sizes, 4” or 6”. They come with a single brush layer and a membrane underneath for an effective seal. Their split design facilitates installation around existing cabling. KoldLok Round can easily be installed into new cable openings, as the cable opening in the tile can be cut using a core drill.
Incorporating KoldLok grommets into your overall airflow management strategy can boost the cooling capacity of cooling units, improve the reliability and lifespan of IT equipment, and optimise your cooling systems. This, in turn, helps deliver energy efficiency gains.
