Walkies Talkies to the Rescue for ‘Last Chance’ Charity

05 December 2024

Client Overview - Last Chance Animal Rescue Centre is a registered charity based in Kent, near Sussex, and London.

They are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. The centre operates under a no-destruction policy, ensuring all animals receive the care they need until they find their forever homes. Each animal is health checked, inoculated, identi-chipped, and leaves with four weeks of free pet insurance.

The Challenge

The primary challenge faced by Last Chance Animal Rescue was maintaining seamless communication across their two blocks—one for cats and dogs, and the other solely for dogs. Effective communication is crucial for coordinating daily operations, managing animal care, and ensuring staff safety. The nature of their work required radios that were waterproof and rugged, with additional safety features such as a panic button and torch for use during dark evenings.

The Solution

PBEComms, recognising the needs of Last Chance Animal Rescue, purchased and donated a quad pack and a six pack of Motorola T92 H20 Waterproof Walkie Talkies through SFL Mobile Radio. These radios were chosen for their durability, waterproof capabilities, and essential safety features.

Implementation

The radios were deployed across the facility, allowing staff in both blocks to communicate effectively. This meant that the staff could carry out various operational tasks such as coordinating dog outings, ensuring smooth transitions for animals meeting potential adopters, and requesting assistance as needed. The built-in panic button and torch features provided an added layer of security for staff working alone or in low-light conditions.

End Result

The introduction of these robust, waterproof radios significantly improved communication within Last Chance Animal Rescue. Staff could efficiently coordinate activities across the two blocks, enhancing overall operational efficiency. The panic button feature, although not yet used, offered peace of mind, ensuring that staff felt safer while performing their duties. The torch proved to be an invaluable tool during dark evenings.

Natalie Stern, Director of PBEComms, shared her thoughts;

“Because of the nature of the work, we needed radios that were waterproof and rugged. The radios have proved ideal. The additional features of a panic button and torch have proved useful on dark evenings. Although the panic feature hasn't been used it makes the staff feel safer when working alone in certain areas of the site.”
