Smurfit Kappa Leads in the Corrugated Recycles Campaign

09 October 2007

Did you know that corrugated packaging has the best recycling rate of any container?

In fact, around 84% of all corrugated boxes are recycled in the UK and yet the industry has done little to promote its green credentials to date.  That is why the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) has launched the Corrugated Recycles campaign and Smurfit Kappa UK is doing its utmost to fully support the initiative.

The objective of the campaign is to print the Corrugated Recycles logo on every printed corrugated container throughout the UK and, as a responsible supplier, Smurfit Kappa is actively encouraging its entire customer base to agree to the inclusion of the logo on all new or existing artwork.  To meet this aim Smurfit Kappa has distributed an environmental newsletter to its customers which explains the benefits of the Corrugated Recycles campaign and how they can become involved.  Smurfit Kappa has also implemented a policy that all new artwork will automatically include the Corrugated Recycles logo unless otherwise requested.

The logo is already recognised and in use throughout Japan, the US and the Far East and Smurfit Kappa believes it is vitally important that the logo reaches the same level of recognition here in the UK.  Already over 75% of Smurfit Kappa’s integrated customers have signed up to the campaign.

As part of Smurfit Kappa’s commitment to minimising its environmental impact it is working with the Carbon Trust to reduce CO2 emissions from its integrated plants throughout the UK.  As a result it now has, or has pending, Climate Change Agreements committing its integrated plants to a 14% reduction in energy usage by 2010.  In addition, 75% of all Smurfit Kappa’s corrugated packaging is manufactured from recycled sources and 100% of its internal corrugated waste is recycled.

Smurfit Kappa strongly believes in working with its customers to help minimise their packaging waste and offers innovative tools such as Pack Expert to ensure the minimum amount of material is used for any pack design.  Other tools offered by Smurfit Kappa enable pallet utilisation to maximise the amount of product on a load and therefore reduce the amount of trucks on the road.

Recycling is high on the agenda for Smurfit Kappa UK and it recycles twice as much packaging as it produces through its own recycling facilities.  The Recycling division, complete with its own paper mills, has a network of national depots offering a full range of paper and board recycling facilities.

Smurfit Kappa Recycling’s national network is strategically placed so that it can collect loose or baled paper from anywhere in the UK, ready to deliver to one of its paper mills for processing.  Each depot provides a full range of services to either local or national businesses on a high or low volume basis.  The division offers everything from bring site paper banks, to baled material collection in addition to fully articulated trailers some of which are equipped with demountable forklift trucks.  Working with companies of all sizes from large scale blue chip organisations through to local SMEs, Smurfit Kappa Recycling has the experience and credentials to meet even the most challenging recycling requirements.
