Everyone’s a winner at Royal Cornwall Showground

Hydor Limited has installed four HV125 belt-drive fans at the showground of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association.
Hydor Limited, UK specialist in the design, manufacture and supply of fans, controls and systems to the agricultural, horticultural and other industrial markets, has installed four HV125 belt-drive fans at the showground of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association. The permanent showground on the A39 near Wadebridge is the home of the Royal Cornwall Show, the premier annual agricultural event, attracting attendances of over 125,000 people. For three days in June each year, it is transformed into a living town, bustling with the life, energy and entertainment of the biggest event on the county’s calendar. For many visitors, wandering around the cattle lines is one of the highlights. Built in 1974 and situated in a south-facing, sheltered location, the interior of the showground’s cattle shed used to get uncomfortably hot during warm weather. Dawn Coryn, owner of this year’s Supreme Dairy Champion, reflected “I have been at the show in years past where we have been hosing cattle down whilst stood in a cold bucket of water in an attempt to keep cool!” David Smith, the Showground Manager, had been looking for a solution to the problem and found it with Hydor. “I spotted an advertisement for Hydor in a trade magazine and, thinking that improved ventilation might help, asked them for help,” he said. A site-survey by Hydor’s Director Duncan Burl confirmed David’s belief and four of the company’s HV125 belt drive fans were installed in the end walls of the building prior to this year’s show. Capable of moving nearly 12m3/sec air each, the installation proved an immediate success. Mr. Smith continued “The atmosphere in the building improved instantly and was greatly appreciated by the cattle and people alike.” Keen to independently verify the value of the installation David asked the vet responsible for monitoring livestock welfare during the show to test its efficiency. “The vet measured temperatures outside and inside at the height of the cattle’s backs – they were exactly the same. I am absolutely converted to the idea of these fans.” The Hydor HV Belt Drive fan is a powerful unit, specifically designed to ventilate larger agricultural buildings, such as tunnel-ventilated housing where substantial amounts of air are moved at low pressure with minimal energy consumption. Constructed from galvanised steel with a specially designed, stainless steel impeller, they are extremely hard-wearing, robust and supplied fully assembled with standard safety guards. The drive mechanism includes ‘sealed-for-life’, maintenance-free ball bearings, which mean low noise and vibration levels. The HV range is available from Hydor in three sizes (80cm, 100cm and 125cm diameters), each with single-phase or three-phase motor and the option of louvres and guards, with three variations for wall-mounting, suspension mounting or on wheels for use at floor level. The range includes a centrifugally operated, back-draught shutter or an automatic, louvre-shutter model. Showground Manager, David Smith, concluded “We have found that the most effective means of ventilating the shed is to leave the side doors in the middle of the side walls open, so that the fans extract the heated air through the end walls, pulling fresh air into the centre of the building and distributing it throughout its length.” Dawn Coryn agreed "It is important that cattle are comfortable and stress-free if they are to be at their best in front of the Judges. I noticed that the water consumption of my cattle has fallen considerably and they appeared much more settled as a result of the improved ventilation. It's a much more pleasant place to be - for the animals, the herdsmen and visitors alike." The 2010 show's many attractions included entertainment from JCB's Dancing Diggers, over 1,000 trade stands, displays of bees, honey, homemade wine, cavies, cage birds, poultry and pigeons, as well as the Cornwall food and farming marquee, equine classes, dogs, music/entertainment, Young Farmers, forestry and countryside sections, a motor fair, a steam fair, a vast flower show and various other exhibitions.
