ABB gears up UK training centre to help manufacturers find new growth opportunities using robotic technology

With the UK manufacturing industry now enjoying its strongest growth for over 15 years, ABB has invested over £100,000 in installing new robot training cells with the latest software technologies at its robot training centre in Milton Keynes. New to the training centre are two IRB 360 FlexPicker robots, widely used in the FMCG industry for picking and packing applications. This dedicated dual cell which incorporates dual conveyors and PickMaster 3 software will assist trainees in gaining a better understanding of picking and packing ‘on the fly’ by introducing them to a host of programming software and options like the latest ABB vision software, product distribution techniques and conveyor tracking features. The training cell is equipped for the trainee to develop their skills and competence in optimising picking and packing accuracies, in high speed handling production lines. As the UK’s largest dedicated industrial robotic technology training school, the centre has already taught hundreds of operators across the UK manufacturing industry how to optimise their production processes using robotic technology. “With the current upturn in the UK manufacturing sector, there has never been a more important time to ensure the present and future generation of engineers and operators are trained to take advantage of the potential growth opportunities that robots can bring,” says Nigel Platt, ABB’s UK sales and marketing manager for robotics. “This requires them to be equipped with the skills needed to ensure the best levels of performance from their installed robots.” “ABB’s commitment to training the UK manufacturing sector and the next generation of engineers is undeniable,” comments Platt. “We now need to encourage more UK manufacturers, colleges and training schools to embrace the opportunities and value of training in robotic technology. We are already working with a number of colleges in the area and with our courses expanding; we look forward to welcoming new students to the training centre.”
