Mosedale Gillat Architects appointed to masterplan Newcastle regeneration project

02 January 2008

Mosedale Gillatt Architects (MGA) one of the North East’s leading architectural and design firms, has recently been appointed to deliver a significant commercial development, forming a key part of Newcastle City Centre’s regeneration agenda.

This new development, a joint partnership between Newcastle City Council and Priority Sites Limited (PSL), will dramatically transform the Elswick area in the West End of the city, with particular focus on Loadman Street and Northbourne Street.

Originally commissioned in 2006 to deliver the scheme’s overarching masterplan, MGA successfully developed the 150 house plan for the entire 5.5 hectare site, which has now been adopted by Newcastle City Council.

Aiming to attract a diverse community, the development will offer a number of housing options to suit a broad range of budgets, along with environmentally sound commercial units and new green spaces, linking the site to the recently landscaped Elswick Park.

Loadman Street will feature a mix of family homes, flats and bungalows, which will be situated on the upper area of the site, to take advantage of the views both up and down the Tyne Valley, with the commercial space centred on the lower part. In total there will be 142 homes created in Loadman Street, with the possibility of another 78 in Northbourne Street in Phase 2 of the scheme. The overall project will provide 4,600 sqm of commercial property.

MGA was appointed to oversee the project following a successful collaboration with PSL on a site in Newcastle’s burgeoning cultural quarter, Ouseburn (the Upper Steenbergs site). MGA has also successfully completed work on similar regeneration schemes in other areas of the country, having developed an outline masterplan design for Little London, Leeds.

MGA was established in 1995 and is renowned for its innovative and bespoke projects across the residential, arts, commercial, community, regeneration and historic sectors.

In the spirit of creativity the company also enjoys working with professional artists as part of its design process and currently takes part in the Arts Council England, North East, Artist Placement programme.
