Wheelabrator Drills Deep For Leading Oil Bit Manufacturer

20 March 2008

Market leading surface preparation expert, Wheelabrator Group has supplied pioneering technology to a major drill bit manufacturer in Northern Ireland, to facilitate its new specialist in-house process.

An existing client of Wheelabrator Group and a leading name in part manufacture for the oil drilling industry, the customer was looking to create a new drill bit made from tungsten, fitted with diamond tips. They were struggling to find the right blast cleaning solution to suit their new technology, one which could accommodate the shear size and weight of the drill bits, but also work with the complex nature and design of the work piece.

Hugh Smillie, Scottish Regional Manager at Wheelabrator Group, said: “As the procedure was completely new for the company, the customer required additional specialist equipment to allow the surface preparation and cleaning process to be completed in-house. We were able to recommend a cost effective solution to meet their needs, without compromising production efficiency or quality of finish.

“Traditionally, its parent group in America would use an airblast solution, however, this process incurred handling issues as some of the drill bits can weigh up to 500kgs with a diameter and height of 500mm. Consequently the customer decided to use a table type shot blast machine instead, as this offered the best accessibility and cleaning solutions.”

Due to its suitability in cleaning large, heavy and awkward to handle components, a table type wheel blast machine was the ideal solution. Easy access to the machine

allows the parts to be loaded onto the table within the blast chamber with minimal effort. The table then rotates under the blast stream from one or two blast wheels allowing maximum exposure and a high production efficiency.

The new blasting technique removes excess graphite following the moulding process; it specifically tackles graphite that has lodged in the pockets where the diamond inserts would be fitted following the blast cleaning procedure.

Mr Smillie continues: “The new process sees the company produce over 12 diamond tipped tungsten drill bits per day. Its very rewarding when a customer comes to you with a specific problem and you can offer the best solution to fit their needs and see a marked improvement in their production output as a direct result”
