The Nottingham Electric Bus Project

Earlier this year Mel Greenfield and Andrew Brain were approached by EIC(Alcester) to look at supplying Electricity panel meters for a new switchboard being built for EON reference Nottingham Electric Bus Project, after reviewing the requirement we came to the conclusion that the Multicube meter system was ideal for this application, this was put forward to both EON and Nottingham Council who agreed.

The project was to supply meters for reading the consumption of electricity at electricity charging bollards at Sherwood and Queen’s Drive bus terminals. Further meetings took place and at one of these meetings it was mentioned they required even more out of the system like identifying what bus was at which charger and for how long and energy consumed. We involved a company called EGS who have supplied similar software for this type of project.

Nottingham City Council is introducing Electric Vehicles to the Sherwood Depot and Queens Drive terminal charging stations and requires to identify the amount of charge given to individual vehicles. The existing manual system suffers from transcription errors and consumes management time in cleansing the data. To improve the quality of the data and reduce cost in terms of management time an automated system is required.
MWA Technology in association with EGS Technologies has reviewed the Electric Vehicle requirements and issues associated with the latest procedures and propose to supply and install an active transponder on the agreed number of vehicles that will not only identify the vehicle but also the charging point location to determine the amount of charge the vehicle has consumed.

The proposed transponders will connect wirelessly to a Data-logger which will maintain the database of each vehicle and charge information; the initial implementation of this data will be presented in a spreadsheet readable format.

Through discussions over the initial proposal, it has been decided that to track vehicle mileage and location is a further requirement, providing a cost per mile figure.
EGS are familiar with and creating the bespoke software requirements as additions to current software, which will be licensed to Nottingham City Council.
