Stansted Mill
Located in Stansted Mountfitchet, the Stansted Windmill dates from 1787 and is a Grade II listed building.
Stansted Millers is a voluntary organisation that looks after the windmill on behalf of the trustees. They finance small to medium scale maintenance and repairs, including the cost of hiring platforms for exterior high access work when necessary.Funding is from public subscription, fund raising events and mill entrance fees.
For several years now Stansted Millers have gone to Rapid Platforms for hire of cherry pickers for high access to the exterior of the windmill - the sails in particular.
On this occasion the project was to give close-up access to the sails (roughly 80 feet in diameter) for our ‘residential engineer’ to check them for safety and integrity of wood and ironwork. When you have several tons of wood and ironwork suspended about 50 feet above you it is important to check it from time to time to ensure nothing is about to break free - possibly with very serious consequences.
