Campaigning for our Listed Buildings

Here at David Salisbury, we have always been fans of historical buildings, not least because we have been very fortunate to regularly work on the redevelopment and refurbishment of a significant number of Listed Buildings projects.


Whether this has been adding or replacing a bespoke orangery or conservatory or updating the timber sash windows − whatever the case, these types of project usually involve working with wood as the construction material.

According to The Listed Property Owners’ Club (LPOC)’s estimate, there are some 1.5 million listed property owners here in the UK. These buildings form part of our history and heritage − being listed, means they are of national importance and interest.

That is one of the many reasons that we are supporting the LPOC campaign for a reduction in VAT to 5% for repairs and approved alterations to Listed Buildings.

As specialists in this field, we frequently work on Listed Buildings as some of these photos of completed projects on this page illustrate. These include an award-winning orangery or garden room for a private customer, the sensitive replication of a classical conservatory at the National Trust-owned Arlington House and the replacement timber windows and doors for the well-known Grand Brighton Hotel.

The national VAT petition is now well over a third of the way to the target of 10,000 signatures that will require a response from Government. But the LPOC is aiming much higher − they would like to reach 100,000 signatures which would perhaps secure a debate in Parliament on this subject.

98% of the listed buildings here in the UK are privately owned − so this VAT reduction would make a significant difference to those having to deal with the costs of maintaining these properties.
