Fireworks Safety
Winter is in full swing! Which means it’s time for pumpkin spiced lattes and fireworks just before the Christmas season.
Whether you are watching firework displays or carrying out fireworks, you need to ensure your safety and that of the people around you.Plan your firework display and read the instructions on the packaging carefully.
It is an offence to carry out fireworks between the hours of 11pm to 7am. Only exceptions are on bonfire night, Diwali and New Year’s.
Only buy fireworks which have the CE mark and ensure you avoid buying fireworks packaged in brown paper as these are made for professional displays.
It is critical that adults are supervising such activities, even if children are using sparklers. It is against the law for anyone under the age of 18 to carry out or purchase fireworks.
- After lighting fireworks, back up to a safe distance
- Do not throw or point fireworks towards another person
- Do not attempt to re-light fireworks or pick them up
- Never consume drugs or alcohol when using fireworks
- Ensure the fireworks are used in an appropriate area and not illegal sites.
- You may want to keep a bucket of water or sand on standby, just in case anything goes wrong. This will help to extinguish fireworks or sparklers.
- Make sure the fire is out and surroundings are safe before leaving the site.
