Outdoor Space trends for 2020

HMS Specialist Surfacing gives its predictions for the New Year

The New Year brings resolutions and helps us plan ahead, but what trends are we going to see in 2020 for outside spaces? HMS Specialist Surfacing has been listening to customers and been keeping an eye on what’s happening in the industry to compile a trends review. See our findings and predictions below.

Creating the third space: This is not the first time we have reported that gardens will become more important, but with homeowners investing more money into their homes, there is no doubt that gardens will see more investment this year. Thanks to Monty Don and the increasing popularity of events such as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, now is a great time to plan for and create a positive outdoor space for your home. And whether it’s a small space or larger garden, we think there will be more Brits making this space more of a home in 2020.

Ditching the crazy paving: It’s a new decade and block paving and crazy paving now look very dated. Gravel is hard to walk on and do we really want to spend time weeding and raking in the summer? Demand for our resin bound and resin bonded surfacing peaked last spring and summer as developers and home owners realised the benefit of laying a resin path or driveway. Easy to maintain, resin surfacing adds the finishing touch to any property − especially when you can choose from a large colour pallet and also create bespoke mixes. Sustainability: Bee-lovers and environmentalists have done a great job at highlighting why bees are so important. That’s why we see more gardens planting bee-friendly plants and flowers to do their bit to help our eco-system this year.

Recycling: A natural next step from being more sustainable, up-cycling and recycling is something we have seen much more of when we install resin surfaces across the East Midlands and UK. From planting in an old piano and teacups to using a water butt, gardeners will be spending more time being environmentally friendly.

Grow your own: Brexit has made people think more about where their food comes from, and one sure way of having enough is to grow your own! There was a lot of autumn planting happening late in 2019 and this is something that is certainly going to get more popular. If you’re new to sowing seeds, learn from uber-gardener Carol Klein who can steer the most inexperienced gardener into home-grown food success. And if you’re worried about accessing those raised beds, think about having a resin path to make it easy to get to and from your crops.
