Biophilic Design: Office Refurbishment
One of the most annoying elements of working indoors is the lack of nature and of course, natural sunlight.
What if you could bring the outdoors into your office space? Studies have shown that employees' mental health and wellbeing benefit from having more natural light and nature surrounding them. This could be as basic as having more blinds open or more intricate through office refurbishment and the purchase of exotic plants and more greenery. Using Plants as indoor decor is known as biophilic design. So what exactly is biophilic design?
Biophilic design is the method of introducing greenery and nature indoors. This can be done through a variety of ways. Here’s some great examples:
• More natural light: The typical office layout often consists of lots of enclosed spaces with basic desks and closed blinds. Dull atmosphere right? By simply keeping all blinds open not only are you saving money on the electricity bill you’re also letting in natural light, proven to improve people's moods.
• More nature/plants in the office: A lack of nature is deemed as unhealthy therefore bringing more plants to sit in and around the office increases employees health.
• Additional greenery: By simply purchasing some small desk plants you immediately provide a more calm and peaceful office environment. You could even take it up a notch and invest in a moss wall, easy to maintain, requiring very little attention. Moss walls are a great purchase, making the office look extremely professional as well as naturistic.
• Increase natural objects: This could be done by purchasing oak wood furniture to give a more natural look and tone throughout the office. You can also choose other natural materials when designing a new office space for example granite, stone, marble and more.
What are the benefits of bringing nature into your office?
There are many different beneficial reasons including the notable increase in productivity and the overall general mood of workers. What business does not want their employees to be happy and productive? Another reason is how much more likely staff are to collaborate with each other when working in a more natural and green environment. Studies show that people working in more urban and dull environments often lack focus and teamworking skills. Now let's talk about science. Plants increase the oxygen in the air which results in offices feeling like a fresher and more relaxing environment. If offices neglect to bring nature and greenery indoors they run the risk of causing employees to feel sleepy and in some cases unwell. No one wants to work in a dull office environment.
