Cranage EMC and Safety- FAQs about EMC and why it is needed
What is EMC and why do I need it?
Put simply, EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) means an electrical or electronic product shall work as planned in its environment and EMC testing confirms this. This means the product will not generate electromagnetic disturbances, which may cause other products to malfunction. This has become even more important in modern day life as we all rely heavily on electronic devices that have the potential in interfere with one another.
Is EMC testing a legal requirement?
The UK adopted stringent laws in 1992 to prevent EMC issues arising, which meant that all manufacturers and importers of electrical or electronic goods had to ensure their products are electromagnetically compatible. The only way to gauge this is to conduct specific EMC tests.
When is EMC testing required?
If you are a manufacturer of an electrical or electronic product you will need EMC testing. Equally, if you are buying more than one item that has already been tested and you are putting these together to create a new item, you will need EMC testing on the final product.
What should I do about EMC?
The EMC Directive doesn’t tell you which testing standards to use or how to do the testing, but it provides useful information on what is required to support a Declaration of Conformity. Our experienced engineers can help you understand what is required.
