Natasha’s Law − Are you ready?
As of October 2021 Natasha’s Law will come into effect affecting allergy suffers across the UK by offering a clearer more detailed list of ingredients on all prepacked foods.
The Food Information (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2019, known as Natasha’s Law was campaigned tirelessly for by the parents of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse who in 2016, tragically lost her life aged 15 after eating a baguette which possibly had sesame in the bread. The packaging was not labelled sufficiently, and the shelving only recommended asking for a full list. Natasha didn’t see any reason for her chosen baguette to contain sesame; sadly Natasha had a severe anaphylactic reaction and died within hours.
In 2019 a Statutory Instrument was laid in Parliament tightening the rules surrounding food labelling. Natasha’s Law comes into effect on the 1st of October, allowing a transition period for companies to implement these new regulations. The labelling systems, or lack of, were letting the consumers down. The reforms cover labelling requirements for foods that are prepared, packed and sold on the same premises. These foods (pre-packed directly for sale) were not required to have labels providing the full ingredients/allergens; Natasha’s law changes this.
The new regulations state the packaging of the food itself be labelled, whereas previously the shelf could state the ingredients or even direct to a verbal confirmation. The Food Standards Agency Guidance Document states: "All written mandatory allergen information must be easily visible, clearly legible and not obscured in any way.” Meaning the way thousands of products are packaged must be changed.
Heather Hancock the FSA chair stated “I encourage businesses to work with the FSA to get this right. Success will mean more choice and better protection for the millions of people who have food allergies.”
