The unseen benefits of cycle parking at major transport hubs

BikeAway has been providing secure cycle storage for the rail industry in Ireland for over 10 years, the scheme was initially put into place to encourage cycling.

This has been a phenomenal success and there are around 450 lockers being used daily in and around the Greater Dublin area. BikeAway is currently installing lockers in some of the more and remote railway stations in Southern Ireland covering Cork and Dundalk. An independent company manage the rental of the lockers, taking the stress and expenses away from the rail industry. The lockers are rented independently via a website and following a security check the keys are distributed. This system has worked so well that at some stations there is a long waiting list to rent a locker.

Cycling to your place of work or study has a huge impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions and pollution. It helps to ease congestion and reduce traffic in local hotspots. The mental and physical health of the cyclist is improved, helping them cope with the stresses of the day ahead or unwinding on the way home.
Jason managing director of BikeAway is hoping that this cycle storage model will take off in the UK and has been in preliminary talks with Network Rail and GWR. All lockers that would be installed in the UK have Sold Secure Bicycle Diamond standard, the only locker in the UK whereby all components meet this accreditation. Sold Secure is an attack house that is approved by Secured By Design, the Official Police Preferred Specification that focus on crime prevention within the building industry.

BikeAway already offer a management system which has been tried and tested within social housing areas, park and rides and shopping centres.
