Cranage EMC and Safety - What is pre-compliance testing and why is it important?

The process of EMC testing is often daunting for those who have not done it before, but our pre-compliance testing service can help to identify issues early in the design process.

Electromagnetic Compatibility, or EMC, is the ability of an electrical or electronic item to perform as intended in its environment, without electromagnetic interference. This means the item will not be interfered with, or be interfered by, other electronic items in the same environment. There are very few studies that show the first-time pass rate for EMC testing, but some suggest that it may be as low as 50%. This can lead to costly redesigns and delays in getting your product ready for the market, as well as re-testing.

Pre-compliance testing is used to help reduce the time and costs involved with full compliance testing, increase the chances of passing testing and potentially improve the time to market. EMC issues are easier to fix when they are discovered early in the design stage, as changes can then be incorporated before the final production. For example, it is much easier to put an EMC fix onto a PCB board rather than having to retrospectively fix the issue once the design is finalised. If an electronic item is fully manufactured before testing is carried out, and then fails, it can lead to costly redesign and reworking.

During EMC pre-compliance testing, our expert engineers use our accredited and calibrated facilities to quantify the emissions that come from a product, covering both radiated and conducted emissions. These are the same facilities that will be used for full compliance testing, helping to ensure accuracy and consistency in results. We also review any available schematics during pre-compliance, as we can review your design and help to identify emissions and immunity problems.
