Triangle Ltd have set a new standard for major highway and rural forest cattle grids

With over 20 years of providing cattle grids to the UK, we have recently been able to enhance our cattle grid design and installation process, and consequentially this standard has been recognised by councils nationwide.

New contracts have been taken up with Scottish Boarders councils where we have installed our cattle grids along numerous major highways.

The cattle grid design process focuses upon these main principles:

Quality - Made from heavy duty grade S355 steels from 25mm thick carrier beams and with 8mm thick transverse beams. The grid is rated over 120T, this is to make sure the grid will withstand constant heavy traffic or large heavy goods vehicles (recently Scotborders adopted them for forestry transport where traditional grids have failed). The design is modular and therefore parts can easily be replaced if needed. Our factory-controlled precast bases reach over 50kN strength, using PAV-2 reinforced concrete. Our grids cover 3mtr to 8mtr road width. Specialised double lock nut for all the grid fastenings, ensuring that the components will not come loose over time.

Efficiency - We base all our highway grid installations on a 5-day turnaround, with smaller private and forestry cattle grids we can look to install in just 1-2 day (traditional cast in-situ grids, there is a minimum 6 weeks of road closure). The longevity of this kind of road closure clearly has an impact on local businesses, schools and the general public. By using our precast grid bases, made offsite and which can be easily installed in one swift process, means the work on site is significantly reduced.

Environmental Impact - We are committed to environmental initiatives within the building and construction sector. We know there are ways to help reduce our effect on the environment while on site, we have taken steps to implement these techniques into our cattle grid design and installation. Our reduced installation times can result in up to 88% reduction in emissions. No on-site drilling is needed because all anchors are cast into the concrete bases, this has an effect both on air and noise pollution. Precast grid design also means there is also minimal on-site waste or environmental contamination (traditional cast in situ bases pose a risk of spills or leaching of concrete). Where traditional in situ grids used formwork to create the bases structural shape, precast bases are formed using a reusable mould, which completely eliminates the formwork waste. Hedgehog ramps are a permanent design feature on all our grids, allowing any small animal to find an escape route if they happen to become trapped inside.

Summarised environmental improvements:

• 88% reduction in emissions and construction noise
• No site drilling
• Minimal site waste
• No risk of spills or leaching from site cast concrete
• No formwork waste
