Atrium Roof- Survey, Design, Fabrication and Installation

The location of our most recent major construction project was The Fisheries in Hackney, London. Built in the mid-1880s to process potatoes, make cloth and manufacture hats, this historic building was a focal point for the up-and-coming Borough of Hackney.

Fast forward to today and this stunning building was given a new lease of life courtesy of a multimillion-pound renovation project. The concept for the building was to preserve the existing heritage and charm whilst incorporating it with a new building of contemporary design.

One of the elements of the build that Triangle Ltd were tasked to produce was the atrium roof, a perfect way to tie these two spaces together. The roof spans the entire length of the 2 buildings and acts as a bridge between the two spaces allowing light and ventilation whilst being a central design feature.

Working alongside architects, building contractors and shareholders, we began the process of designing this large metal support structure. With any older building comes challenges, and we came across a few when it came to surveying the space. The old building with all its character was not build to today’s exacting standards. Our total station created surveys down to a couple of millimetres in accuracy over the 40-meter span, enabling us to take multiple surveys to makes sure the measurements were absolutely accurate before we began the intricate design process.

The design of the roof was completed using 3D CAD software and was signed off by the architects and the structural engineers soon after. This would allow the glass manufacturer to make the laminated panels to fit exactly in the space provided, using our detailed design as their guide. The complex fabrication process, with many compound angles, met all our tolerances and that of the glass manufacturer’s needs.

Our site installation team completed the project in the agreed time frame, and it was met with praise by the glass contractors who fitted the panels easily due to our precision in concept, design, fabrication and installation processes.

This one-of-a-kind building is now complete and sits as an architectural triumph in the centre of Hackney, London. It’s used as a communal meeting space and multiple state of the art apartments.
