How to deal with scratches on your composite decking

We know that you want your composite decking to look as good as new for as long as possible. However, we also know that accidents do happen, no matter how hard we try to prevent them.

For example, moving furniture and plant pots or dropping plates and glasses can cause scuffs and scratches to occur. But don’t worry − there are ways and means of getting your decking back to its beautiful best.

Here are a few hints and tips from our experts to get you started:

• If you have a light scuff, it is best to leave it well alone. Once your composite boards have weathered slightly, most scuff marks will naturally fade or even disappear over time and will become unnoticeable.

• If the scuff or scratch is slightly deeper but is not completely through the top surface, a walnut can be used to help blend the marks until natural weathering has taken place. Only use a natural raw walnut − do not use extracted walnut oil or any other oil prescribed for scratch removal.

• Gently rub the flesh of the walnut over the affected area and allow the natural oil to soak into the scratch. Try not to get the oil over too large an area as it will make the surface slippery. The oil will ‘weather’ off in a few weeks, after which time the scuffs and scratches will be almost unnoticeable.

• If your scuff or scratch is too deep for the ‘walnut’ method, it is a good idea to contact an expert before trying any other technique.
Ultimately, prevention is better than cure, so by trying not to ‘drag’ items across your composite decking and carrying items carefully, you will be able to limit any damage and keep your decking looking it’s best for longer.
