Introducing TrackSafe™ Walkway Systems

Step on Safety has been providing GRP track and cess walkways for years and, while there could never be a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution, they have now developed a range of four standard options that can be quoted quickly and easily by the metre.

Designed to provide safe, non-slip and highly visible walkways for rail engineers to move around on, each one is supplied either in kit-form or prefabricated in modular sections for quick and easy installation − by SoS teams or specialist contractors.

The basic system is the TS-50 which can be placed directly on hardstanding or embedded into soft, level ground. It’s slightly raised with 38mm QuartzGrip Standard Mesh Grating which prevents water from pooling on the surface. For uneven ground, the TS-150 System is a raised walkway constructed using 150mm GRP Channel profile, with SafeRail handrail on one or both sides. It’s designed with a minimum Safe Working Load of 5kN/m2 and the handrails meet 0.84kN per m2 horizontal loading.

If you need something more robust, The TS-HD uses GRP I-Beams and 50mm mesh to give an SWL of 14 kN/m2 − suitable for moving tools and equipment around on. The TS-X System takes you across the tracks and uses adjustable pedestals to ensure the pathway is level with the rails for a trip-free solution.

The three trackside walkways can all be upgraded to include lighting, either under the handrail or under the floor mesh. Solid-Top grating is an option for all but the TS-50 System.

David Riley, the new Rail Sector Manager at Step on Safety, was the driving force behind the TrackSafe Systems. “We wanted to make it really easy to understand what the options are surrounding track walkways. The four new systems can almost be ordered off-the-shelf with only minor adjustments needed to make them suitable for each location.”

Officially launched at Rail Live 2022, the first big order of the new TS-150 System was installed by Scottish Woodlands earlier this year and the team there found it very easy to work with, despite having little experience with working with GRP.

Step on Safety celebrates 15 years in business this summer and, while they also work within the Construction, Marine and Utility Sectors, their first big project was a rail one − 800 GRP pit ladders for TfL. Since then they’ve provided over 200 embankment staircases, 50 kilometres of track walkway and thousands of metres of depot platforms.
