Using Stage Blocks in Drama
Both GCSE Drama and A-Level Drama and Theatre qualifications are designed to inspire creativity in Students. The subjects teach key skills in performing arts such as:
The knowledge and understanding of DramaExploring performance texts
Theatrical skills
Collaborative working
Individual contribution
Evaluating both their own and others’ work
Theatre practice & safe working practices
Key characteristics of a performance are taught, for example, genre; structure; character; form of style; language and stage directions.
One key aspect of a performance is how ‘meaning’ is communicated using performance space and in particular ‘spatial relationships’ on stage.
Students will explore the relationship between the performers and the audience, the design of the set, props, costume and lighting and sound (acoustics).
The use of stage blocks or action blocks within set design can help with the placement of characters or ‘stage positioning’. Blocking is a term which takes into consideration the nine separate positions or acting areas on stage. The use of those nine positions is imperative for set design operations such as the lighting, direction and audience views of a performance. The terms ‘Upstage’ and ‘Downstage’ refer back to when stages were tilted and higher at the back of the stage.
