Binspired: We Crafted Bespoke Waste Solutions for London Luton Airport
They imagined it. We built it.
We’re proud to share that we were awarded the tender to design and deliver bespoke waste bins for London Luton Airport (LLA) in June 2024. As the fourth busiest airport in London, LLA served over 16.2 million passengers in 2023 alone, making it an important centre for domestic and international travel. As part of the airport’s £20 million refurbishment plan, this project aimed at enhancing passenger experience and maintaining strict safety standards. We needed to replace the existing terminal bins with an Aviation Security in Airport Development (ASIAD) guidelines-complaint solution. These guidelines are essential for safeguarding airports and guiding the planning, design, and development of secure airport infrastructure.
This is how we made security meet functionality
We modified our popular MM Slimline Litter & Recycling Bin to have galvanised steel bodies which allow for collection of up to four different waste streams to meet the airport’s requirements. Feedback from other airports we’ve done projects with say large capacity is a game-changer for the waste collectors to keep the surroundings tidy and not worry about emptying the bins as frequently.
We designed the bins with transparent bodies and tough galvanised steel frames, in both triple and quad variations. The see-through facia makes it easy for the airport staff to keep an eye on what’s inside. Large capacities of 300, 360, and 400 litres were sited across all the terminals, which each see thousands of travellers every day. The quad units also feature a food waste waste streams, which feature lift-up flaps for their aperture, which keeps waste out of public sight and also prevents odours from filling the spaces. Finally, each unit has sturdy rubber feet to help the bins move without marking the floors during relocation or cleaning purposes.
These amazing custom bins undergo Wybone’s market-leading state-of-the-art manufacturing process, starting with the sheet being cut using our laser, pressed and precisely assembled using structural rivets as a mechanical fastening process, keeping the manufacturing as eco-friendly as possible. They are then powder coated and fitted with bespoke LLA artworks.
One bin. Multiple solutions.
Blends seamlessly with the airport aesthetics
Enhanced visibility of what’s inside the bin
Easy to deposit and easy to empty
Rubber feet ensure the bin stands sturdy
Fold-down apertures act as deflectors and direct litter into the bins
Closable flap keeps food waste odours in
Aviation’s not new to us
It’s not our first time fulfilling orders for the aviation sector. We’ve had the pleasure of crafting and delivering our high-quality range of bins to Manchester, Leeds Bradford, and Birmingham airports. Each project added to our expertise in understanding the unique needs of busy transport hubs, making security, efficiency, and durability meet.
The bottom line
By creating smarter, cleaner, and safer waste solutions, we’re happy to have helped the airports be clean and tidy.
