Bettersize BeScan Lab Stability Analyser
The Bettersize BeScan Lab Stability Analyser, now available in the UK through Meritics Ltd, represents a significant advancement in the analysis of dispersions.
Utilising Static Multiple Light Scattering (SMLS) technology, the BeScan Lab offers real-time evaluation of suspension and emulsion stability, enabling early detection of destabilisation phenomena such as flocculation, agglomeration, sedimentation, and coalescence.
The BeScan Lab operates by employing a probe equipped with a laser light source and two detectors positioned at 0° and 135°. This probe moves vertically over the sample cell, which contains the dispersion under study. As it scans, the system continuously records transmission and backscatter signals at 20 µm intervals throughout the sample's height. These signals are directly related to particle size and concentration, with changes over time indicating potential destabilisation. Following each scan, an Instability Index (IUS) is computed, allowing for both short-term and long-term stability assessments based on IUS trends. Additionally, the system can determine mean particle size by analysing transmission, backscattering, or particle migration rates.
One of the standout features of the BeScan Lab is its capacity to analyse concentrated dispersions with particle sizes ranging from 10 nm to 1 mm and volume fractions up to 95%. This broad applicability makes it suitable for a variety of industries, including cosmetics, food, paint and ink, oil and petroleum, and pharmaceuticals. The analyser’s compliance with ISO/TR 18811, 13097, 21357, and 22107 standards ensures that it meets rigorous industry requirements.
In terms of practical benefits, the BeScan Lab provides true stability measurement by characterising the original sample without the need for dilution or alteration. It identifies and quantifies destabilisation mechanisms, offering rapid detection that can inform formulation adjustments and quality control processes. Its compact design and user-friendly interface make it an accessible tool for laboratories seeking efficient and accurate stability analysis.
Meritics Ltd, with over 30 years of experience in particle characterisation, is the exclusive distributor of the BeScan Lab in the UK. Their expertise and commitment to customer support make them a reliable partner for organisations aiming to enhance their analytical capabilities with this innovative technology.
