Transforming Play Areas for Inclusive Learning: Meadowbank School’s New Outdoor Space

The Reason
The project began due to the school's expansion, which included a new building extension. With updated admission criteria that focused on supporting pupils with complex learning needs, the school needed to redesign its back playground. The goal was to create outdoor spaces that would be accessible, inclusive, and supportive of the school’s evolving educational priorities.
The Solution
Sovereign Play was selected for the project after a previous quote for playground works. The school wanted a bespoke design that would cater to the needs of their diverse student body, particularly those with complex learning requirements. The solution was to develop play areas that would promote safer, more inclusive play opportunities and complement the new school facilities.
The Process
The design and installation process with Sovereign Play went smoothly. The school had a clear idea of what they wanted, and Sovereign’s team worked to bring this vision to life. Features such as a wetpour roadway, hopscotch area, needlepunch sports pitch, and a basket seat log swing were included, ensuring the outdoor spaces were engaging, accessible, and supportive of both physical and social development.
The Results
The redesigned playground has made a significant impact on the school community. Pupils are excited to explore the new areas, which have improved the way they interact with one another and engage in outdoor learning.
