PROJECT: The full refurbishment of the Ruby Ward, at Medway Maritime Hospital for Medway NHS Foundation Trust.

The Ruby Ward’s £5 million transformation from a dated space, previously used by mental health providers, into a new 30-bed cardiorespiratory unit with state-of-the-art facilities for patients suffering serious breathing or heart conditions, was funded by NHS England.

Working with main contractor, Marcon Construction and architects, Hunters, our brief was to supply and install automatic doors and glazed screens for the project.

CHALLENGES:
The challenges for this project were the common ones of short timescale and, as on all construction sites, completing installation and commissioning whilst other trades were also trying to complete their work. Great project management from main contractor Marcon Construction ensured challenges were navigated smoothly and quickly, and the project delivered on time.

OUR SOLUTION:
Working with the architects Hunters, and main contractor Marcon Construction, the solutions specified from Axis Entrance Systems for the four-bed bays included six Doorson telescopic automatic operators, each with two 30mm slimline profile, glazed door panels, sliding over a fixed glazed screen.
The doors are activated by wall mounted touchless switches with safety devices covering the threshold and the area in which the doors travel during their opening cycle.
In addition to the doors, we fitted 12 glazed screens of various dimensions, one of which was fire rated.
For the finishes, the products were powder coated to RAL 9010 satin and glazed with 24mm double glazed units.

OUTCOME:
Our Doorson door-sets and our glazed panels provide many significant benefits for patients, staff and visitors to the new
Ruby Ward, at Medway Maritime Hospital, including:

  • Excellent light transfer & a feeling of spaciousness.
  • Clear visibility between patients and staff.
  • Improved infection prevention with touchless door
  • operating switches.
  • Improved protection from the door safety devices
  • An attractive, efficient, effective & improved environment for staff, patients & visitors.
