Waterproofing Buried Roofs, Podium Decks & Terraces
With their increase in popularity there is an increased need to ensure the waterproofing design is correct both for the above area use and the below deck use. Continuity of waterproofing and/or appropriate overlapping and detailing is critical for success.
The key to successful waterproofing is a robust design considered at the earliest stage of the project.
Delta Membrane Systems Limited has a comprehensive range of waterproofing and drainage products specifically suited for the successful waterproofing of buried roofs, podium decks, balconies and terraces.
Considerations for the appropriate waterproofing products include:
• Deck/Buried roof construction material
• Number of joints
• Movement due to deflection under loading
• Build up on top of deck
• Use of space below
• Tightness of site space (built to plot boundaries).
Delta membrane Systems product range includes:
• Liquid applied systems − for seamless waterproofing
• Elastomeric Systems − to accommodate anticipated movement
• Sheet systems
• Drainage and Protection membranes
• Joint sealing and detailing systems.
Ground Gas Protection Systems
Greater emphasis on appropriate gas protection measures have been brought about by the issue of BS 8485: 2015 − Code of Practice for the Design of Protective Measures for Methane and Carbon Dioxide Gases for New Buildings. All ground gas (Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Radon, VOC’s, along with others) protection systems should be designed in accordance with the most up to date Guidance and Regulations. Attention is drawn to CIRIA C665, C716, C735, C748 and BS 8485:2015. In addition there are specific requirements for building warranty providers such as NHBC.

Ground Gas Protection & Waterproofing
Waterproofing structures offers protection to structural components, buildings, and installations from the penetration of water; it reduces risk and will prolong the life time of the structure. However, some below ground construction projects require protection from both water ingress and gas contamination.
It’s now possible to produce a waterproofing design which incorporates both a waterproof and gas proof protection system, however these types of projects require a different strategy and methodology as to what would be classed as a typical waterproofing design. Both BS8102:2009 and BS8485:20015 are intertwined. Basements and below ground structures which need to be watertight and gas proof are not anymore complex to design but require further considerations at the design phase and throughout the project.
The object of structural waterproofing is to protect a structure for its lifetime from water ingress.
The object of ground gas protection is to prevent a build-up of gasses against a structure.
Combining Waterproofing Design with Ground Gas Protection
Innovations within the waterproofing sector have seen the introduction of Ground Gas Protection Systems, which are capable of offering both gas protection and waterproof solution.
A Waterproofing Design Specialist will be able to interpret the requirements of BS8102:2009 and BS8485:2015 to produce a waterproofing design which incorporates both a waterproof and gas proof protection system.
Concrete & Construction Joint Waterproofing (including Leak Sealing Systems)
Concrete should be designed and constructed to accommodate movements:
Types of movement:
• Shrinkage − Initially rapid, less severe as the concrete ages.
• Creep − A phenomenon which causes a redistribution of stress away from points of intensity.
• Thermal movement − Expansion and contraction of the structure with temperature changes.
To accommodate movement, structures are designed with “Joints”. These joints are placed in concrete slabs and pavements at regular intervals to prevent the future development of cracks. The design of the joint is important for the overall design to function.
Waterproofing these joints is a necessity.
Different types of joints are:
• dilation joints,
• expansion joints,
• settlement joints,
• dummy joints,
• pressed joints, and
• contraction joints
Joint waterproofing should be incorporated at the planning stage of a project.
External Waterproofing Systems & Drainage Membranes
It offers maximum safety for thick viscoelastic coatings and a multitude of alternate Type A systems. Even when driving rain can penetrate through an imperfectly installed upper edge trim.
NP Drain Geocomposite Membrane - is an external waterproofing membrane that drains groundwater away from your property reducing the hydrostatic pressure (water pressure). A compact two-layer geocomposite membrane which offers high drainage capacity through specially-configured dimples.
Offers dependable vertical and horizontal drainage in civil engineering, buildings, tunnels and retaining walls. NP Drain protects garden roofs over underground structures, basements and green roof parking decks from moisture. The dimpled sheet prevents water logging and offers great protection from root penetration, whilst the geotextile layer filters out fine particles thus ensuring constant flow of water to drains and discharge point.
With its high compressive strength (150 kN/m2), this drainage and waterproofing system solves every problem.
Terraxx −Terraxx is a dimpled sheet with a geotextile layer which acts as a surface layer. Usually used as a green roof external drainage layer which also protects the primary waterproofing applied to substrate prior.
Floraxx Top − Floraxx Top is a water-retaining drainage sheet with an integrated geotextile for perfect green roofs. It has innovative octagonal dimples for compressive strength. There is one sheet for drainage, water storage, and filtration, making it easy and quick to lay out straight from the roll.
Flood Resilience & Recoverability
BS 85500:2015 Choice of Strategy
BS 85500:2015 offers a choice of strategies when designing a flood recoverable solution:
• Avoidance
• Mitigation
• Water Exclusion (flood resistance)
• Water Entry (flood resilience)
Design Options
The simplest water exclusion measure is to build the ground floor above the maximum level that any flood water is likely to reach. However, this is often impractical to structures already built and planners may not approve of a new build being disproportionately higher than neighbouring properties.
Where the potential flood level is below 600mm, there are a number of relatively simple ways of sealing off the inside and keeping a structure more or less dry. A common option is to use tanking; a continuous waterproof layer buried within the wall and floor construction that prevents floodwater from seeping into rooms.
Delta’s Technical Team’s meticulous approach to flood recoverability incorporating structural waterproofing solutions, has seen projects meet insurance industry standards (meaning home and business owners) will be able to insure previously uninsurable properties.
Resin Injection Systems
Cracks, which are often only hairline, can appear in concrete, especially at basement/underground levels which can cause serious and detrimental leaks and seepage.
Cracks in structure’s substance are structurally weak points. Additionally, penetrating water may cause further damage and affect the lifespan and usability of the structure.
Reasons for cracking include, stresses through load, stresses through shrinkage, stresses through ground movement, stresses through dilatation and compaction.
Resin injection systems can be used to seal permanently wet and dry cracks along with construction joints, or to provide a waterproof curtain behind the structural envelope.
Delta’s resin injection systems can be used in new build projects or in existing structures.
A construction joint is a planned crack, a crack is an unplanned joint and these require attention.
They can be used to stop pressurised flowing water leaks and is suitable for use where in contact with drinking water, they also has low flammability and can be used for small and large cracks.
Liquid Applied Waterproofing Systems
Type A − Barrier System
Type B − Structurally Integral
Type C − Drain System
Each Type’s application is influenced by ground conditions and the proposed structure’s use. The definition of terms and guidance related to their appropriate usage are highlighted in BS8102:2009.
Type A Protection Barrier Protection
Barrier protection is, materials which offer a barrier to the passage of water with the aim of keeping the target environment within a defined level of ‘dryness’.
BS8102:2009 code of practice for the protection of below ground structures against water from the ground provides guidance on methods which can be adopted to deal with and prevent the entry of water from the ground into a structure that is below ground level. It is wide referred to and used in basement waterproofing, reference should be given to the adoption of a design team, water table classification and defects and remedial measures.
Damp Proofing
Damp also changes the atmosphere of a structure. If a damp problem is not remedied, it may lead to more serious complications.
Different types of dampness will require different treatments.
Rising Damp
Rising damp is a form of dampness that occurs when ground water rises-up through walls, floors and masonry via a capillary action (sometimes capillarity, capillary motion, capillary effect, or wicking) drawing moisture up though porous elements of a building’s fabric. When water rises within the wall it will allow ground salts which are in solution to rise up the wall through capillary action, these salts are typically nitrate and chloride salts which are hygroscopic and actually attract moisture from the air. Ammonium Sulphates are often found in chimneys as a result of the burning of fossil fuels, these slats are also hygroscopic and classically why damp patches are often exhibited on chimney breasts.
Penetrating Damp
Penetrating damp is moisture which penetrates laterally through the fabric of a building from the outside (typically because of leaking roofs, pipework, blocked or damaged guttering and cracks in walls.
Penetrating damp is particularly common in older buildings and south-west facing walls.
Dampness can be measured with electrical resistance meters or carbide meters, either on the surface or within the building fabric itself. A Calcium Carbide meter can be a very accurate diagnostic tool especially when profiling is carried out.
Combination Waterproofing
BS8102:2009 offers guidance on 3 types of Below Ground Level Waterproofing Systems used in the United Kingdom. These are categorised as Types: A, B & C.
