General hardware for doors
The EMKA program includes chest handles, compression handles, surface mounted locks, cam locks, button type snap locks, slam locks, slide latches, panel latches, deadbolt locks, bridge clamps and heavy-duty latches and refrigeration style handles. These are just some of the many hardware items required to keep this area of industrial manufacturing moving.
Chest handles for example with key locks are inset with slam function − otherwise known as flap handles, they can also enable closure in the locked configuration and are used widely in cabinets, office furniture, vehicles, even domestic furniture. In addition, EMKA have extensive stocks of complimentary items such as hinges and extruded gasket − of which there is a wide selection manufactured at the EMKA Profiles plant in Birmingham. EMKA (UK) Ltd and EMKA Profiles Ltd are committed to supporting UK manufacturing industry.
Sealed quarter-turn option for floor and ground latches in railway situations
The threaded cover may be used with a number of 1000 program latches which offer square, slotted, triangular, hexagon and proprietary railway key inserts. The quarter-turn latch is first installed onto the floor mounted cover plate or access panel, with the “O” ring sealed cover then fitted over it for protection and a neat flush appearance which presents a safe footing for pedestrians.
EMKA cover stay and door stop solution to wind and gravity problems
In these situations, EMKA offer a program of cover stays and door stops in a variety of configurations including manually operated locking or self-operating as the panel is opened/closed. A simple stay may be a folding type or a sliding type door stop with a moving prop. Otherwise, telescopic types offer a longer mechanical prop and so spread the loads involved over a wider range. Button release or push-click operation is available.
New specification all EPDM integral gasket and spine
This integration provides many advantages − EPDM is itself a more dynamic material than PVC making it easier to fit while conforming to door contours and providing good temperature, UV and ozone resistance in service. At the same time, a unified moulding shows a cost benefit to installers, plus it is less hazardous in fire situations.
New integral EPDM gasket is available ex-stock from the EMKA Coventry sales warehouse where custom sections can also be discussed.
As a specialist hardware company EMKA are pleased to carry extensive stock of standard gasket profiles for enclosures, cabinets, vehicles, HVAC and similar. These extruded sections provide a simple and effective means of sealing to common IP ratings such as IP44, IP55, IP65, IP66 protecting against ingress of dust or liquids when installed face-to-face between a door and cabinet frame. Other sections install edge-to-face and yet others seal inspection windows or provide a wiping action. Paint protection and compensation of varying gap thicknesses are further important uses for gasket sections.
Profiles in EPDM, neoprene, PVC, black nitrate and natural rubber cover traditional expanded closed cell (self-adhesive) foam, through wiping blade and bubble or P type sections, with self-grip (clip-on), channel fixing and window type (with expansion insert), to more complex multi-functional and custom designs perhaps with fillers or flocked weather strips and supported sections with internal or flange structural support.
EMKA Gaskets − flame retardant, low smoke, low tox for the rail industry
Especially for customers of the railway industry, EMKA has developed a product range with fire-protection tested or fire-protection capable locks, hinges and gasketing made of fire prevention checked material. It complies with the special requirements of the sector and is designed to meet the relevant standards such as DIN EN 45545-2 “Railway applications − Fire protection on railway vehicles”. In their in-house Technology Centre both standard and customer-specific solutions for railway vehicles are designed.
Of particular interest are likely to be custom sections including vulcanised frames for immediate installation on doors, panels, inspection windows and similar. These include EPDM gaskets fire prevention tested to DIN 5510-2 NF F 16-101/-102 and silicone sections tested to DIN 5510-2 NF F 16-101/-102 UNI CEI 11170 CEN / TS 45545-2* (*replaced by DIN EN 45545-2).
Stainless steel compression latch variant for hygiene areas and improved security
It is notable that the compression design of these latches offers tamper and vibration resistance for most industrial installations and brings together two well-known factors - the well understood benefits of stainless steel, and the proven design/engineering technologies of EMKA, in their range of specialist latches and locks for industrial cabinets and enclosures.
EMKA expertise enables the corrosion-resistance and ultimate strength of stainless steel to be developed into the robust longevity of these locking products which therefore enable engineers to “fit-and-forget” confident that designed-for-purpose high quality designs mean that these products save time and replacements costs over their lifetime of service in hygiene, corrosion and washdown areas.
The EMKA stainless steel locks and latches program includes quarter-turns, hygiene/wash-down locks, conventional L and T handles, space-saving swinghandles and rod mechanisms, compression locks, safety locks (vibration proof with built-in cover to exclude dirt), ring handle, wing knobs, padlockable handles and heavy-duty latches.
New Emergency Hammer for buses or trains
Emergency hammers are a familiar sight in buses or trains, where they are located ready to use and clearly visible right next to the windows. In case of an accident or emergency, they help to break the window glass to allow trapped passengers to escape. The EMKA emergency hammer is made of fibre-glass-reinforced plastic with hardened steel tip and complies with the relevant fire protection standards. The optional belt cutter is indispensable for the proper use in all vehicles with safety belts to cut straps with locked or trapped mechanisms.
This new design features a large convenient grip and is offered in three versions − two of which provide a hand protection grip. The range includes a simple holder or a security holder with extensible/retractable steel retaining cable.
Space-saving lever locking lift handles from EMKA
The EMKA 1099 is just 20mm wide and operates a twin rod mechanism with the option to add a padlock. Where an integral cylinder lock with a pop-out lever handle is required, then their 1190 program at 32mm or 35mm wide offer attractive solutions. Likewise, their sleek 38mm wide 1390 series lift handle keeps the rod lock closure mechanism well to the outer door margin.
EMKA special sealing profiles for specialist situations − rail, road, off-road, HVAC etc.
Specialist gasket sections are offered in flame retardant, low smoke, low tox materials compliant to relevant standards while extruded gaskets for enclosures and other purposes are available in self-adhesive, self-grip (clip-on), channel fixing and window type (with expansion insert). The range includes EPDM, NBR, CR, PVC and silicone, as well as fire protection specifications and many with EMC compatible coating.
Coaches, motor homes and caravans also feature with moulded sections to suit doors, windows and ventilation panels, as well as external storage compartments. In addition, EMKA offer a bespoke custom design service − where there is a requirement for a really different profile then the team at EMKA are delighted to design, develop and produce to suit specific needs.
Moulded sealing strips are described in the EMKA catalogue and on their website to match the functions commonly found on special or custom build road and rail vehicles, i.e. glazing profiles, self-gripping, fire protection, EMC shielding, edge protection and tank support bands. These are common requirements for emergency service vehicles, caravans/motor homes, trucks, coaches, rail carriages and control cabinets to mention just a few applications.
Edge Protectors − protect edges and people
Self-locking “U” sections are ideal for covering of potentially sharp metal or glass fibre edges which may otherwise present a hazard to people on furniture or equipment. Typically, shelving, doors or similar may require safety sheathing or a form of bumper protection which can be provided by these purpose-designed, ex-stock sections.
EMKA point out that edge protectors are often called for elsewhere for purely cosmetic purposes where they serve to tidy up otherwise unsightly edges or to protect cut edges from environmental factors − or from impact damage in some situations.
EMKA explain that in addition to carrying comprehensive UK stock they also offer a custom design service on their extruded section products.
Visual indication IP69K stainless steel compression latch
The lid of the new EMKA compression lock is spring-mounted and snaps shut automatically only when closed. If the lock is turned by 25 degrees or more, the lid remains open at an angle of 90 degrees. A clearly visible opening indicator then appears on the inside of the lid: a red area with the EMKA logo. On trains, for example, railway personnel can see from a distance as soon as a door or flap is not completely closed.
Major features include resistance to shaking and vibration, thus preventing unintentional opening of the lock, also the lock complies with protection class IP69K and fire protection regulations. Other features include automatic flap closure with seal on the lock to protect from damage to the door.
Anti-microbial bow handle
Silver is a reliable and well proven biocide now introduced to the popular EMKA 1095 program during the production phase where it is mixed into the granular base. This new anti-microbial handle offers exactly the same performance and appearance as standard items in all other respects. The WI version is also black to match normal industry practice and has an optional clip on cover for enhanced aesthetic appearance as well as cleanliness and for security.
Antimicrobial plastics are ideally suited to these applications − while there is no change in the previous physical or other chemical properties there are also no restrictions on use and no special care is required for installation or aftercare, as the silver additive is fully integrated throughout the polyamide. The antibacterial effect is considered not as a substitute, but as a supplement to regular disinfection procedures, e.g. in the toilet area or on food and pharmaceutical machines.
Handles with this silver biocide inclusion have laboratory proven effectiveness according to ISO 22196 as demonstrated against E. Coli (intestinal bacteria) and Staphylococcus aureus. This is particularly critical in hospitals especially because Staphylococcus aureus can be multi-resistant to a range of antibiotics.
Locking solutions for the Railway industry
This Railway range is signposted in the new EMKA guidelines on their website which connects to a comprehensive range of locking solutions characterized by their modular design, versatility and high quality. The highest standards are guaranteed at EMKA by their extensive manufacturing know-how and a production control process certified according to ISO 9001. EMKA also provides individual special solutions derived from new customer design requirements.
Typical products include a compression latch with flap and optical opening indicator with an integral 90° opening flap that serves as visual opening indicator, which is clearly visible when lock status is open/uncompressed. There is also a quarter-turn railway lock for use outside the gasketed area and a Railway compression latch with opening indicator − the lock is both tamper and vibration proof as is their Safety latch lock with status marking. Further, there is a 90° 3D Hinge with integrated 3D adjustment by use of eccentric discs and a 180° concealed Gear hinge with 180° opening angle.
