Occupational Health Skin Surveillance Tools
The EDS10 Skin Hydration Monitor can detect damage due to chemical exposure that is not visible to the naked eye. This allows the user to identify whose skin is being damaged and the extent of the damage long before this becomes visible. Action can then be taken to prevent further damage and to restore the skin to its normal condition. The instrument can subsequently be used to establish whether the action taken is achieving the desired result. So instead of simply waiting until the skin damage escalates into a clinically relevant dermatitis it is now possible to be pro-active in the same way as is done with lung function testing and audiometry.
For further details of the EDS10, please visit our website
The Dermal Measurement system EDS12 comes with hydration as standard with the option to add water loss and erythema (redness) measurements.

Glove Review
It is inevitable that in many organisations there will be a need to provide gloves as protection against chemical and biological hazards. If correctly selected and used they can provide effective protection for your workforce. Unfortunately, unless the system ensures they are selected and used correctly the use of gloves may actually increase the effect of chemical contact, resulting eventually in contact dermatitis, contact urticaria or damage to internal organs.
Ensuring the correct gloves are selected and used within their real performance limitations is far from as simple as many assume. (For more on this see overleaf.) It is also an aspect of personal protective equipment where there is much misinformation and inappropriate advice. The result can be damage to workers' health, with all the costs that this entails, as well as frequently unnecessary expenditure on gloves that are really not fulfilling the employer's expectations.
As independent advisors on the prevention of damage to health due to workplace skin exposure at EnviroDerm Services we have many years experience of helping clients ensure that they have an effective system for the provision and use of gloves and one that does not involve unnecessary cost. Since we do not supply gloves and are independent of all manufacturers and suppliers, you can be confident that our advice is impartial and objective. We can help you avoid the problems arising out of the bewildering variety of gloves available in the marketplace and the often less than scientifically founded claims from some suppliers as to their gloves real performance.

The cost of the course is £275 excl. VAT. To book please click here . Discounts are available for multiple bookings, for more information on this contact us

This course is your opportunity to benefit from this expertise so you can develop and maintain an effective skin health surveillance system as part of your management system.

Occupational Skin Problem Investigation
As the diagram shows, this is not as simple and many assume. It is easy to reach a conclusion that may lead to incorrect action in terms of treatment and management which can actually exacerbate the problem.
To correctly identify the cause - or frequently causes - requires a full assessment of both occupational and non-occupational factors, frequently the support of a medical specialist - usually a consultant dermatologist specialising in contact dermatitis - and a detailed evaluation of both the clinical and environmental issues that can affect the conclusions and subsequent management.

Dermal Exposure Management Assessment (DEMA)
.....that the way you manage workplace skin exposure is actually up to date and correct? It is our experience that far too many believe that they have it right, whereas in reality their workforce is at significant risk of damage to health. This is one aspect of health and safety where there are many myths and misconceptions which, whilst appearing plausible, do not reflect reality.
For example:
If your skin exposure risk assessment is based on the safety data sheet, then there is a very real possibility that it is wrong!
If you believe that as airborne exposure to a sensitiser is below the WEL then your workforce is safe - you may be wrong!
If you use pre-work/barrier creams to protect your workforce, then you are almost certainly putting their health at risk.
If you are using category I gloves for a category III application, then your workforce's health could be at risk.
If you believe that all natural rubber gloves cause latex allergy, then you are not in possession of the real evidence.
We could list many more. The simple fact is that the way the skin interacts with the working environment is much more complex than many realise. What appears 'logical' may be the wrong approach. Even some of the 'official' guidance on risk assessment and risk management is not correct.
With over 50 years of specialisation in this aspect of health and safety we have a unique level of knowledge and expertise to ensure that the way you manage skin exposure complies with both the regulations and the scientific knowledge that we now have about skin and the environment.

Occupational Skin Management Guide
Writtn by Chris Packham, based on his 39 years' experience working on the prevention of damage to health due to workplace skin exposure.
About us
Here at EnviroDerm Services, we also use a unique approach in solving occupational skin exposure issues, known as “Dermatological Engineering”, which primarily focuses on the reduction or elimination of risks to skin health in various settings. The approach takes the knowledge of skin and its behaviour from dermatologists (and immunologists, toxicologists, etc) and combines it with what is currently possible in terms of engineering technology to provide effective methods of solving skin exposure hazards.
We offer a range of products and services that can help you develop an effective skin management system for your workplace as well as investigate and manage ill-health resulting from skin exposure should it occur:
