X-Rings / Quad Rings

X-Rings / Quad Rings

X-rings (also known as quad rings or four-lobed seals) offer an alternative seal solution to O-rings for use in reciprocating dynamic or rotary applications.

They are often used in applications where the seal is required to operate under lower pressure and temperature conditions. Under low pressure, high sealing efficiency can still be achieved with an X-ring as the mold parting line is not coincident with the primary sealing faces.

X-rings can typically be retrofitted into existing O-ring grooves with the size often based around the original O-ring size. The square envelope of the X-ring stops the seal from twisting and rolling, preventing spiral failure often seen when O-rings are used in reciprocating applications. X-rings can be manufactured to standard O-ring sizes, as well as custom sizes for specific applications.

X-rings can also offer a reduction in friction as trapped media between the lobes can provide lubrication to the sliding sealing face. For low pressure applications, the combination of a low modulus material and small cross section can help to reduce friction. In high pressure applications, the friction can be reduced by selecting a higher modulus material with a reduced
D-rings

D-rings

D-rings offer another alternative seal solution to O-rings for use in reciprocating dynamic or rotary applications. They offer the same sealing characteristics as an O-ring and can be used in both low and high pressure application across a broad range of temperatures.

D-rings can typically be retrofitted into existing O-ring grooves with the size often based around the original O-ring size. The flat geometry on the base of the D-ring stops the seal from twisting and rolling, preventing spiral failure often seen when O-rings are used in reciprocating applications. D-rings can be manufactured to standard O-ring sizes, as well as custom sizes for specific applications.

For low pressure applications, the combination of a low modulus material and small cross section can help to reduce friction. In high pressure applications, the friction can be reduced by selecting a higher modulus material with a reduced coefficient of friction.
T-Seals

T-Seals

T-seals offer an excellent sealing solution for static or reciprocating dynamic applications. T-seals can be designed to retro fit into existing O-ring grooves (both piston and rod orientations) or optimized for specific application requirements.

T-seals comprise of an elastomer T-shaped cross section and two backup rings made from an engineering grade plastic, often PTFE or PEEK.

The use of the backup rings allows the T-seal to be used in high pressure applications whilst still maintaining high sealing efficiency at low pressures. The design of the T-seal uses the system pressure to actively energize the backup rings, ensuring efficient extrusion resistance in single and bi-directional pressure applications, both in static and dynamic conditions.
Installation procedures for T-seals are often simplified over other seal designs due to their symmetrical geometry.

As an alternative to T-seals, PPE also manufactures spring seals (sometimes referred to as all-in-one T-seals).
L-seals

L-seals

L-seals offer a cost effective alternative to T-seals for static or reciprocating dynamic applications where high gland fill may be a concern with T-seals. L-seals can be designed to retro fit into existing O-ring grooves (both piston and rod orientations) or optimized for specific application requirements.

Similarly to T-seals, L-seals comprise of an elastomer L-shaped cross section using a single backup ring made from an engineering grade plastic, often PTFE or PEEK.

The use of the backup ring allows the L-seal to be used in high pressure applications whilst still maintaining high sealing efficiency at low pressures. The design of the L-seal uses the system pressure to actively energize the backup ring, ensuring efficient extrusion resistance in single direction pressure applications in static and dynamic conditions.
Spring Seals

Spring Seals

Spring seals (also known as S-seals and all-in-one T-seals) comprise of a high modulus elastomer and two integrated anti-extrusion springs. They are used to effectively seal applications that are subject to:

- Large clearance gaps
- High pressure (bi-directional)
- Restricted access for seal installation
- Remote hardware makeup
- Chemical attack by oilfield media

PPE spring seals are available in unique combinations of elastomer materials not found elsewhere.
Elastomers: HNBR, EnDura® FKM and Perlast® plus Perlast® ICE FFKM
Springs: PEEK, Inconel Alloy or Stainless steel 316

Steel springs offer optimum strength, however PEEK springs are ideal for low wear applications where metal-to-metal contact with the housing is a concern.

PPE spring seals provide a versatile sealing system for bi-directional pressure applications in static conditions. Commonly used in place of T-seals, spring seals are much easier to install, especially in ROV and restricted access situations. Spring seals are symmetrical in their cross section and so they can be used in both rod or piston grooves.

Spring seals can be manufactured in various standard or non-standard sizes allowing them to be retro-fitted into existing O-ring grooves.
Cap Seals

Cap Seals

Cap seals offer a low friction seal for use in dynamic reciprocating applications.

A plastic cap provides a seal against the dynamic sealing face, an O-ring is used to energize the plastic cap and operates in a static environment. The O-ring uses the system pressure to increase the sealing force acting on the cap. The cap also prevents extrusion of the O-ring energizer when used in high pressure applications.

The plastic cap is typically made from a low friction material, such as PTFE. Under low pressure conditions, liquid media can provide lubrication as it migrates between the dynamic sealing faces through a capillary effect. Cap seals are often referred to as wet seals as they allow a small amount of fluid to pass across the seal.

Cap seals can be offered in two different designs, a heavy duty cap or a low profile cap:
Heavy duty cap
- Provides a thicker cross section of sealing cap for use with high pressure, up to 40 MPa
- Requires a non-standard groove for fitment
- Thicker section allows for greater wear, due to higher sealing forces induced
Low profile cap
- Generally for light to medium duty
- Can be retro fitted into standard O-ring grooves
- Provides good wear resistance and low friction, due to lower sealing forces induced
Wiper Seals - Scraper Seals

Wiper Seals - Scraper Seals

Wiper seals are also known as scraper seals, excluders and collars. Their primary role is to provide a physical barrier to limit the ingress of moisture, dirt and other contaminants from piston rods used in hydraulic systems into the primary sealing system. This prevents external contamination from damaging internal seals and other system components.

Wiper seals are typically used in conjunction with other sealing elements and require a snap in fit into rod groove locations, complimenting a primary sealing solution.
Lip Seals

Lip Seals

Energized lip seals comprise of a high modulus elastomer, (or high grade engineering plastic) jacket and a low modulus elastomer O-ring energizer. The low modulus O-ring energizes the jacket under low pressure conditions to increase the sealing force allowing them to be used in low and high pressure applications.

Energized lip seals provide a versatile sealing system for uni-directional pressure applications in either static or reciprocating dynamic conditions. Energized lip seals are symmetric in their cross section and so they can be used in both rod or piston grooves. Backup rings can be used in conjunction with energized lip seals to enhance extrusion resistance.

There are various profiles of energized lip seals available with differing qualities depending on application requirements.
Chevron Stacks

Chevron Stacks

Vee packing, or chevron stack sets, comprise of one or more rings with a V-shaped profile. These rings are positioned between male and female adapters located at the top and bottom, forming a multi-lip packing suitable for mechanically challenging conditions in rod and piston locations.

Precision Polymer Engineering can provide vee packing (V-packing) sets manufactured from its range of high performance elastomers, PTFE and PEEK.

Chevron stack set applications
Typical applications include mud pump packing, where the seals encounter high pressure and an abrasive media containing various solids, oil and water.

For higher pressure applications, additional V-rings can be added to the stack as required.

PPE can also design and manufacture custom chevron stacks for specific applications where extreme bi-directional pressure, in aggressive environments, requires robust sealing.
