Workplace First Aid Requirements

Workplace First Aid Requirements

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require you to provide adequate and appropriate first-aid equipment, facilities and people so your employees can be given immediate help if they are injured or taken ill at work.

What is ‘adequate and appropriate’ will depend on the circumstances in your workplace and you should assess what your first-aid needs are.

The minimum first-aid provision on any work site is:

- a suitably stocked first-aid kit;
- an appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements;
- information for employees about first-aid arrangements.

It is important to remember that accidents and illness can happen at any time. Provision for first aid needs to be available at all times people are at work.

Some small workplaces with low-level hazards may need only the minimum provision for first aid. But there are circumstances and factors that will mean you need greater provision. You, as an employer, are well placed to decide the provision you need, but our First Aid Requirements Calculator can help to make the task a whole lot easier.
First Aid Requirements Calculator

First Aid Requirements Calculator

Our First Aid Requirements Calculator is an online tool that allows you to simply and accurately calculate how many first aiders you need and the level of training they require.

Simply input a few details about your workplace and then the calculator creates a bespoke, printable report that breaks down your first aid requirements and recommends suitable training − perfect for demonstrating that you have completed a thorough needs assessment.

Adult & Paediatric Basic Life Support
Healthcare staff are expected to possess the knowledge and skills necessary to recognise and respond to signs of clinical deterioration effectively.

While the primary focus is on preventing such deterioration, some patients may experience a decline leading to cardiorespiratory arrest, requiring prompt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Early and effective CPR can be life-saving.

To ensure a reliable resuscitation response, healthcare organisations must establish a clear resuscitation policy and provide a robust resuscitation service. As part of their responsibility to deliver safe and effective care, these organisations must ensure their staff receive appropriate training and regular updates to maintain the resuscitation skills required for their roles.

First Aid at Work
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 mandate that all employers must ensure their employees receive prompt attention if they are injured or become unwell at work. This involves conducting a risk assessment, appointing an adequate number of first aiders, and providing them with appropriate first aid training.

Emergency First Aid
Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, employers are required to ensure that employees receive prompt care if they are injured or fall ill at work. This obligation includes conducting a risk assessment, appointing an adequate number of trained first aiders, and providing suitable first aid training.
Are you complying with your legal obligations?

The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to provide adequate and appropriate first aid resources, facilities, and personnel to ensure employees receive immediate assistance if they are injured or become unwell at work.

What constitutes "adequate and appropriate" depends on the specific circumstances of your workplace, and you should conduct an assessment to determine your first aid needs.
  • At a minimum, every workplace must have:
  • A suitably stocked first aid kit.
  • An appointed person to oversee first aid arrangements.
Clear information for employees about the first aid provisions.
Remember, accidents and illnesses can occur at any time, so first aid resources must be readily available whenever people are at work.
